The Basics
Opened in 1997, the UMass Memorial Medical Center Ambulatory Psychiatry Service serves the community of Worcester, Massachusetts with general medical and behavioral health services. UMass Memorial also provides substance abuse treatment to adult clients in the form of a non 12-step co-ed outpatient program which utilizes therapeutic services that employ evidence-based methods of treatment including CBT and DBT.
Treatment and Staff
In order to qualify for enrollment in the UMass Memorial Substance Abuse Treatment Program, prospective clients must request a referral from the facility or have a referral from a primary care physician who is a member of the UMass network. Out-of-network clients with referrals are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Once a client has been approved, he or she must participate in a phone screening to review their personal recovery needs and to schedule an appointment for an in-person assessment. Clients work with therapists to devise individualized treatment plans which combines both individual and group therapy at a frequency determined by the client’s need.
Clients may opt to attend either morning and afternoon therapy sessions. Clients have access to a complete medical staff at UMass and dual diagnosis support is also available. The substance abuse treatment staff consists of a psychiatrist, Master’s-level therapists, CSWs and a clinical nurse.
Extras
Clients can access a range of services at UMass Memorial beyond those specific to substance abuse treatment. Family therapy, couples therapy and anger management are available as well. Additionally, clients who have been accepted into the outpatient program may access various pharmaceutical trials conducted by the UMass Center for Psychopharmacologic Research and Treatment.

While treatment is limited to general outpatient services, a credentialed staff and dual diagnosis support make for a thorough first step in the recovery process.
