UCLA Eating Disorders Program Review

Based in Los Angeles, California, The UCLA Eating Disorders Program offers medical and psychiatric support for adolescents and adults struggling with anorexia, bulimia and related co-occurring disorders. The program is located specifically in the Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital, which is part of the UCLA Health Network, and provides individualized care planning. In addition to outpatient and Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), the facility also has more intensive inpatient treatment options available as well.

Accommodations and Food

The facility has a total of 75 psychiatric beds available, 25 of which are designated for acute inpatient stays. Though the specifics of each may vary somewhat, both single and double occupancy rooms are available with twin beds, bedside tables and closets. Clean towels and linens are provided by the hospital and on-site laundry services are available as well. In addition to the bedrooms, the facility also has a dayroom with a TV, stereo and a piano. Games, puzzles and magazines are also provided.

While food is not allowed in the bedrooms, residents can store personal food in a common refrigerator. Throughout their stay, clients are served three healthy meals a day in an on-site cafeteria.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning treatment, all residents go through an initial intake and assessment process to help the staff determine their needs. As the facility is a fully-equipped hospital, those in need of detox services can receive them on-site. Because the program is generally for acute issues, stays tend to last 30 days or less. While the specifics of each treatment plan may differ, residents typically attend full days of treatment which include individual and group therapy with evidence-based treatment practices like CBT and DBT (though the methods used may vary by practitioner).

Groups cover a wide range of topics including family therapy, emotional processing, self-regulation, mindfulness, healthy body image, relaxation techniques, art therapy, trauma-informed care, recreation and pharmacotherapy whenever necessary. Because the program focuses on eating disorders, treatment plans also include nutritional counseling, meal planning and cooking classes.

Extensive dual diagnosis services are available including medication management. The staff at the UCLA Eating Disorders Program consists of MDs, psychiatrists, psychologists, RNs, case managers, nutritionists, LMFTs and additional Master’s and PhD-level clinicians.

Extras

In addition to the intensive inpatient plans, those who complete primary care can also continue with outpatient or PHP as a form of aftercare. In all levels of care, specialized treatment plans are available for adults and adolescents.

In Summary

Overall, the UCLA Eating Disorders Program is a medical and psychiatric care option available to both adults and adolescents. Treatment includes evidence-based practices, holistic care, nutritional counseling and other life skills-oriented groups. All plans are individualized and include dual diagnosis support whenever necessary. While the cost of treatment may vary by the strength of each client’s insurance, the UCLA Eating Disorders Program is a resource worth considering for those in the area.
