The Basics

A component of the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at the University of California at Los Angeles, the UCLA Dual Diagnosis Program provides outpatient treatment for individuals struggling with co-occurring disorders. The program seeks to help clients understand how their mental health diagnoses affect their addictions, as well as how to create coping skills to manage both. The program has been in operation for four years and is located in the medical plaza near UCLA’s Ronald Regan Hospital.

Treatment and Staff

Clients receive a bio-psycho-social assessment upon entering the program, during which they discuss their addiction as well as their mental health challenges. The treatment team at UCLA Dual Diagnosis includes several psychiatrists who provide comprehensive medication management for conditions such as depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder.

Clients attend group therapy Monday through Friday from 4 to 6 pm for eight weeks. Clients also have individual therapy at least once a week and have a psychiatric consultation every two weeks.

Groups are led by LMFTs and focus on teaching CBT skills to help clients manage triggers, create boundaries and improve relationship skills. Groups seldom exceed 10 participants. The treatment team also recommends that clients attend 12-step or other peer support meetings outside of program hours.

Extras

On Wednesday evenings, there’s an additional recovery issues lecture that family members and members of the community may attend. The treatment team works with each client to create an aftercare plan that may include ongoing therapy and medication management.

In Summary

UCLA’s Dual Diagnosis Program offers the most up-to-date treatment for co-occurring disorders, facilitated by an accomplished multi-disciplinary treatment team. The program allows clients to examine the relationship between their mental health and substance abuse and learn self-care and therapeutic techniques for sustaining recovery.
