Two Dreams Review

Two Dreams has operated a high-end residential treatment program in North Carolina’s Outer Banks for over eight years. Two Dreams employs evidence-based therapy, holistic practices and the 12 steps to give clients multiple approaches to lasting recovery. Two Dreams also operates an outpatient program in Chicago, Illinois and one in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Two Dreams was founded by Dr. Andrea Barthwell, a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. Dr. Barthwell is actively engaged in addiction medicine research and has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of International Drug, Alcohol and Tobacco Research and the Journal of Global Drug Policy and Practice, among others.

Accommodations and Food

Two Dreams Outer Banks is situated in a large beachside home in Corolla, a small community in the northeastern corner of the state. The well-appointed home features a traditional décor and has ample deck space and a swimming pool. There are 10 bedrooms for residents, each of whom has a private room and bathroom. Clients who need cell phones and computers to keep up with work responsibilities can use them under staff supervision.

The home has a kitchen staff who helps clients prepare their meals. Nutrition, meal planning and grocery shopping are part of each client’s treatment plan, and staff members help them plan and create communal and individual meals according to their preferences and nutritional needs.

Treatment and Staff

Residents in need of detox are referred to nearby facilities to stabilize. Once in residential treatment, clients initially commit to 30 days of treatment, which can be extended as-needed. Most residents stay for 90 days.

Two Dreams’ treatment revolves around its philosophy of “three phases, seven dimensions and three outcomes.” Its phases are Coming In, Looking In and Looking Out, which describe how the client’s relationship to self evolves during treatment. The seven dimensions are abstinence, peer support, professional guidance, medication review, nutrition, exercises and rituals, the latter of which includes working the 12 steps. The program’s three intended outcomes are mental peace, physical well-being and personal productivity.

Residents begin each day with a beach walk at 7:30 am and then attend treatment groups and individual therapy each morning and early afternoon. Afternoons may also include trips to a nearby gym, yoga or art therapy. After preparing dinner, clients are transported to 12-step meetings in the area. Upon return, they have time for personal recreation, journaling and recovery homework before lights out at 10:30. All clients have individual therapy at least once a week.

Therapy uses CBT and trauma-informed care to help clients develop coping skills and handle triggers. The program is capable of providing dual diagnosis support and has a consulting psychiatrist who provides therapy and medication management for clients with co-occurring disorders. In addition, the treatment team includes LPCs, case managers and peer support specialists who provide 24/7 on-site support and supervision.

Two Dreams focuses on integrating clients’ physical and emotional well-being; it emphasizes sleep hygiene and other activities to help clients repair their bodies’ circadian rhythms.

Extras

On weekends, clients have recreational outings such as a Wild Horse tour or deep sea fishing. The staff also organize regular movie and game nights.

For aftercare, case managers work with each client to locate therapists and peer support meetings in their area. Two Dreams welcomes family visits and encourages local families to attend family therapy.

In Summary

Two Dreams Outer Banks has been providing holistic residential treatment for over a decade. Its “seven dimensions” treatment philosophy ensures that clients improve their physical, mental and emotional health and discover how all work together to facilitate recovery. Over the typical 90-day stay, clients identify professional goals, improve their communication skills and create habits of well-being that lay the foundation for successful long-term recovery.
