The Basics

Two Dreams offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and standard outpatient treatment in the Garden District of New Orleans. Two Dreams’ New Orleans opened in 2016; it also runs a high-end residential treatment program in North Carolina’s Outer Banks and an outpatient program in Oak Park, Illinois. Two Dreams employs evidence-based therapy, holistic practices and peer support frameworks to give clients multiple approaches to lasting recovery.

Two Dreams was founded by Dr. Andrea Barthwell, a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. Dr. Barthwell is actively engaged in addiction medicine research and has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of International Drug, Alcohol and Tobacco Research and the Journal of Global Drug Policy and Practice, among others.

Treatment and Staff

Two Dreams’ treatment philosophy revolves its “three phases, seven dimensions and three outcomes.” Its phases are Coming In, Looking In and Looking Out, which describe how the client’s relationship to self evolves during treatment. The seven dimensions are abstinence, peer support, professional guidance, medication review, nutrition, exercises and rituals, the latter of which may include working the 12 steps or another peer support framework such as Refuge Recovery, SMART Recovery or Celebrate Recovery. The program’s three intended outcomes are mental peace, physical well-being and personal productivity.

IOP clients to attend group therapy three times a week for three hours and individual therapy each week. Standard outpatient clients attend group therapy once or twice a week and have individual therapy as-needed. The length of treatment is usually eight weeks, and IOP clients step down standard outpatient treatment as they progress. Both daytime and evening groups are available.

Therapy uses CBT and trauma-informed care to help clients develop coping skills and handle triggers. The program is capable of providing dual diagnosis support and has a consulting psychiatrist who provides therapy and medication management for clients with co-occurring disorders. In addition, the treatment team includes LPCs and case managers who help clients locate job skills training and set educational and professional goals. Clients are also asked to attend three peer support meetings each week.

Extras
