In 1980, a federal grant established Turtle Creek Valley MH/MR as a community mental health center, offering free services to residents of the South Side of Pittsburgh regardless of their ability to pay. A year later, they expanded their services to Steel Valley communities and established drug and alcohol treatment counseling. Today, the agency offers a full continuum of mental health and substance abuse treatment.

Just a few miles from Carnegie Mellon University and the Andy Warhol Museum, Turtle Creek Valley MH/MR operates their Alternatives treatment center, providing outpatient substance abuse services for adults 18 and older. Their goal is to teach the skills essential to maintain sobriety and attain a higher level of functioning.

Treatment and Staff

Before treatment begins, clients must schedule an assessment conducted by one of six Master’s-level therapists on staff. Turtle Creek Valley MH/MR offers both outpatient and Intensive outpatient programs. The length of treatment varies, but typically outpatient clients need at least 30 days. Before they can be assigned to a group, clients are required to meet for two individual sessions to determine the best fit. Specialized groups are available for pregnant women, women with dependent children and IV drug users. Co-occurring disorders are treated by a staff psychiatrist who monitors and prescribes medication, if needed.

Group therapy is facilitated by a therapist and cannot exceed eight clients. Topics change on a weekly basis, but concentrate on substance abuse and recovery issues with a 12-step focus. Meeting once a week, sessions are available in the morning and evening to accommodate those with families, school or jobs.

The IOP program meets three days a week for three hours per day for a minimum of six weeks. The number of individual therapy sessions depends on the diagnosis, but typically clients meet their therapists once a week. The program typically lasts 60 days, but it can vary depending on the individual. Clients are encouraged to attend 12-step meetings as a source of continuing support.

Therapists on the Alternatives staff are all trained in CBT . Per state law, all professionals have advanced degrees in psychology, with focuses on addiction. The psychiatrist comes to the clinic twice a month for medication and psychiatric evaluations.

Extras

Turtle Creek Valley MH/MR offers a DUI Program at Alternatives for court-ordered clientele.
