Turning Point Foundation Review
Turning Point Foundation, located about 50 miles north of Montgomery in Thorsby, Alabama, was originally opened back in 1991 as an outpatient substance abuse treatment center for men. In 2005, the residential facility was established. This facility serves men who are 18 and older with faith-based programming that is individualized in a serene environment lead by caring professionals.
Accommodations and Food
The residential campus is in a remote location which is peaceful and quiet. The facility offers double occupancy bedrooms furnished with full beds, a desk and dressers in each. There are several shared bathrooms in the building where the clients sleep, and a couple more in the recently remodeled administrative building on campus. This is where there are offices, meeting and classrooms. There is a dining hall and state of the art kitchen, a media room with big screen TV, rec room with a Ping-Pong table, computer lab and conference room.
Three meals a day are provided and served in the dining hall that is prepared on site. The food is healthy for the most part, though there are opportunities to splurge a bit, and allergies are taken into account for each individual.
Treatment and Staff
The program offered at Turning Point is highly structured and packed with activities and classes daily. An early morning wake up followed by morning chores and breakfast, then two to three group sessions or classes before lunch. The afternoons and evenings are filled with devotionals, group sessions or study time for written assignments. The treatment is heavily based in Christian values and beliefs and incorporates church service daily. There are several group therapy sessions and at least one individual session per week that covers relapse prevention and the 12 steps.
Typically the program is designed to last about 90 days, though some clients complete the program more quickly and some opt to stay on. During this time the clients work closely with their counselors to develop an aftercare plan which may involve getting set up with a sober living facility, or simply getting connected with local support groups. The staff is made up of counselors and pastors who have a strong connection to the church community, and former clients who stay at the facility to participate in the internship training who offer guidance and peer support to new clients.
Extras
The grounds also contain a volleyball court, basketball court and fishing pond. The clients have access to the weight room in the evenings or during down times between or after meetings, and during family visitation Sundays there is a playground and picnic area for all to enjoy.
There is a monthly family program in addition to the weekly visitations where family members of clients can come to the campus and participate in a group meeting and meal with the staff.
In Summary
The treatment at Turning Point aims to guide their clients to a healthier and happier life without drugs and alcohol by mending relationships and education. This is not a clinical program, which may be a deterrent for those who may be in need of a detox or treatment for co-occurring disorders. However this is a great place for those who are seeking a new way of to look at their lives and start over again in a supportive and peaceful place.
