Turning Point Counseling ServicesThe Basics

Turning Point Counseling Services, located in Fairbanks, Alaska, offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) to men and women suffering from substance abuse and mental health issues. While Turning Point doesn’t require clients to participate in 12-step programs, it does encourage them to do so. Dual diagnosis support is also provided. Founded in 2009 by Joseph Nowell and married couple Gunnar and Rachelle Ebbesson, Turning Point is located near bus lines and offices for social services.

Treatment and Staff

The clinical staff at Turning Point uses CBT, DBT, EMDR and Motivational Interviewing (MI) when working with clients. Group and individual therapy are offered, using the different treatment methods to varying degrees depending on the needs of each client.

After intake, clients are assessed for the level of care they need. Two options are availablea Phase I IOP for more intensive care and a Phase II program that is less intensive.

In Phase I, which lasts a minimum of eight weeks, each client is assigned to a Master’s-level clinician and participates in three weekly group sessions, each three hours long. One hour of each session focuses on psychoeducation, which involves instruction on how addiction develops and how clients can learn to view it as a treatable disease. IOP clients participate in three to four group sessions, alternating by week.

After eight weeks, clients can move into Phase II, which introduces 12-step recovery and relapse prevention. Clients have the option to attend off-site meetings or the meeting hosted at Turning Point. They attend at least one meeting weekly, but are encouraged to attend more. Phase II clients attend one session of group therapy and one session of individual therapy weekly. Clinicians also advise clients on how to reintegrate back into community and family life during this stage. For those resistant to AA, SMART Recovery can be substituted instead.

After Phase II, those who are ready can move into the Continuing Care program which serves as aftercare and consists of weekly group therapy sessions for up to nine months. Those who relapse or encounter other difficulties can be moved back into Phase II when necessary.

Group sizes for therapy run between six and eight clients, while psychoeducational groups can have as many as 18. Clients receive a minimum of one session of individual therapy per week in Phases I and II, though more can be scheduled based on need.

Turning Point draws heavily from alternative treatment methods, so clinicians and specialists offer one weekly session of yoga, one weekly session of meditation and two weekly sessions of acupuncture. A naturopathic doctor also works with each client. Additionally, dietary guidance, botanical medicine, individualized nutritional therapy, Amino Acid Therapy and homeopathy area part of the treatment program.

At Turning Point, detox from opioid substances is managed without the use of medications. This is known as NODOP and lasts from eight to 14 days. Dual diagnosis support is offered by Turning Point clinicians for those diagnosed with co-occurring disorders.

Seven clinicians are employed at Turning Point including psychotherapists, a psychologist and clinical interns. Staff certifications include LCSW and LPC.

Extras

A family program is available that consists of a family night held once every four weeks, with group therapy and an educational session. Family members can learn about addiction and how to support their loved one in recovery.
