Turning Point Center for Youth and Family Development OutpatientThe Basics

Turning Point Center for Youth and Family Development has been serving the residents of Fort Collins, Colorado for over 50 years. Turning Point provides youth and family counseling and residential and outpatient treatment for youth with substance use and co-occurring disorders.

Its Day Treatment program provides full-time schooling plus group, individual and family therapy. The Day Treatment program treats boys and girls ages 10 to 18 using the Positive Behavior Support therapeutic approach, which helps them learn how to replace self-destructive behaviors with pro-social decisions and activities.

Treatment and Staff

Most clients come to the Day Treatment program through referrals from local agencies and have case managers who help them transition into Turning Point and then re-acclimate to traditional school when they are ready to leave the program.

The duration of treatment is anywhere from three months to one year, depending on a client’s needs and progress. Clients attend the program each week day from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. During the week, they have at least 30 hours of schooling, group therapy at least twice and individual therapy at least once. Counselors also travel to clients’ homes one evening each week for family therapy.

Throughout treatment and schooling, clients learn how to identify the behaviors that have made their lives challenging and learn pro-social decision-making and interaction. The treatment team, which includes CAC-IIs and an LPC, uses trauma-informed care, CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), psychodynamic processing and the Seeking Safety curriculum. Clients may also have EMDR sessions to help process traumatic events. Turning Point also has a consulting psychiatrist for medication management and treatment of co-occurring disorders.

Clients are encouraged to attend 12-step meetings or other peer support groups in evenings and on weekends. The treatment team also exposes them to SMART Recovery techniques.

Extras

Turning Point takes advantage of their proximity to Colorado’s ranches and has clients participate in equine therapy. During the summer, when clients may not have mandatory schooling, the staff facilitates their growth by arranging comprehensive service learning opportunities.

In Summary

Turning Point Center for Youth and Family Development has multiple treatment tracks and counseling options to help children, teens and their parents heal from substance abuse and mental health disorders.
