Tulsa Women and Children’s Center (TWCC) Review

Tulsa Women and Children’s Center (TWCC) is one of the few places in Oklahoma to provide residential substance abuse treatment services for women, pregnant women and women with children. As part of Palmer, which is a state run drug and alcohol program, Tulsa Women and Children’s Center has been providing evidence-based treatment to residents in Osage, Rogers and Wagoner counties since 1981.

Accommodations and Food

Tulsa Women and Children’s Center is a 52-bed, state-run institution; the sprawling red brick building could be an office complex. Inside, the setting is basic but comfortable. Administrative offices, kitchen, dining hall, TV room, classrooms and counseling rooms are on the ground level, with the living quarters on the second and third floors. Women with children get their own rooms. Cribs are provided for infants, along with linens, diapers and basic toiletries. Women without children sleep two to a room. All clients have a twin bed, a nightstand and a shared closet and dresser. Bathrooms are dormitory-style, at the end of the hall.

Meals are served three times per day and while not gourmet, all basic food groups are provided. There is also a salad bar option at dinner. Formula, baby food and menus appropriate for children are purchased or prepared by a licensed dietician. Snacks consisting of fruit, yogurt and protein bars are provided in between meals.

Treatment and Staff

The first step in admission to the residential facility is to go through Palmer Outpatient Clinic for an assessment. If clients meet the state criteria and are deemed eligible, they are put on a rather long wait list for TWCC. Average wait time could be anywhere from one to three months, depending on the census. Length of treatment varies, but typical stays are three to six months.

Once admitted, residents are assigned a caseworker and a primary counselor. TWCC provides 35 therapeutic hours per week of CBT-based drug and alcohol treatment, as well as medical and psychiatric services for those with co-occurring disorders. Clients also receive trauma-informed care, motivational therapy classes and counseling around domestic violence. The women see their individual therapists once a week or more, and engage in group therapy every day. Group topics include domestic violence, grief and loss, health and diet, behavior management, anger management, stress reduction, building self-esteem, addiction studies and seven hours per week of parenting classes. Issues such as nurturing self and child, nutrition, coping skills and parenting in recovery are addressed. Women also attend four hours of process group each week. The in-house children’s program provides age appropriate schooling and babysitting services, taught by state certified teachers.

Days start with a 6 am wake up and breakfast at 7 am. Groups and individual therapy sessions start at 9 am, giving clients time to shower, clean their rooms and prepare for the day. Lunch is served at noon and sessions resume at 1 pm. Clients have chores from 3 to 4 pm daily and free time until the evening meal at 5:30 pm. Evenings consist of either process groups or recreational therapy; this is not a 12-step facility, so meetings are not part of the treatment protocol. Visiting is allowed after 30 days at the discretion of the treatment team. Residents do not leave the facility unattended for the first 30 days.

The treatment team consists of psychiatrists, physicians, case managers, nurses and Master’s-level substance abuse counselors. The client-to-staff ratio is 10-to-one.

Extras

Recreational therapy takes the form of yoga, art classes, meditation, movement therapy and mindful walking groups. Outside evening and weekend activities include movie night, bowling, shopping and dining out, as well as local festivals and parks and recreation for children.

Clients also have access to on-site computers for resume building and job searches.

In Summary

Tulsa Women and Children’s Center provides women and women with children structured, extended stay treatment for free, but the long waiting list could be a deterrent. For those who can wait, this looks like a great place to get sober, especially for women with children, considering the daycare and school services.
