Truman Medical Centers: Lakewood Medical Detox Review
Lakewood Medical Detox is the inpatient substance abuse stabilization unit of Truman Medical Centers in Kansas City, Missouri. Serving the residents of east Jackson county, Lakewood Detox has been in operation for over 10 years. The facility is located near Fleming Park and the Lakewood Oaks Golf Club.
Lakewood Detox is located in Lakewood Hospital, which provides primary care treatment as wells as behavioral health care. In addition to its detox program, Truman Medical Centers offers outpatient substance abuse treatment at Lakewood Counseling in Lee’s Summit and Recovery Health Services in Kansas City.
Accommodations and Food
Detox clients have their own rooms with en suite bathrooms in the newly-renovated hospital. The unit has eight to 10 beds, and each room is outfitted with its own television. As soon as they’re stable enough, they can take their meals in the hospital cafeteria, which serves standard American fare. Clients in the early stages of detox may have their meals brought to their rooms.
Treatment and Staff
Clients must first have a phone assessment to determine if they’re eligible for treatment, though clients are sometimes admitted through the hospital’s emergency room. Phone assessments are offered Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm.
The average stay in the detox is three and a half days. As the unit is located in a hospital, clients in need of dual diagnosis support are assured that they’ll receive necessary psychiatric evaluations and medications. The nursing staff is available to provide 24/7 support and supervision, and an LCSW provides substance abuse counseling, family counseling and comprehensive discharge planning to each client.
As soon as clients are able, they’re encouraged to take advantage of the hospital’s recreational and occupational therapy activities, such as sports and art projects. Currently, there are no on-site 12 step meetings available for detox clients, but discharge planning may include referrals to local meetings.
Extras
Family members are encouraged to visit towards the end of the client’s stay. Aftercare planning may include placement in one of Lakewood’s two affiliated outpatient programs.
