The Basics
True North Recovery Services provides outpatient substance abuse treatment for men and women. Located in Encinitas, a beach city approximately 25 miles north of San Diego, California, True North is a boutique facility with a highly trained staff and a small number of clients. A variety of services are offered but the only structured treatment track is the adult Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).
The founders of True North Recovery bring an impressive list of credentials to the business. Kansas Cafferty is an LMFT who has worked in mental health and addiction treatment since 1997 and is also a Commissioner for the National Certification Commission of Addiction Professionals. Co-founder and Medical Director Dr. Valeh Karimkhani is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) and a fully licensed physician who practices in all areas of medicine, emphasizing a whole-person approach to treatment. Dr. Karimkhani is an adolescent and adult psychiatrist in addition to being board-certified in Addiction Medicine.
Treatment and Staff
Many clients enter to the outpatient program after completing a residential treatment, but those in all phases of recovery are welcome. Treatment begins with an initial assessment and evaluation so that an individualized treatment plan may be developed. The philosophy of True North’s staff is that outpatient treatment after inpatient is like having an internship before launching a career; it allows those who are new in recovery to practice their skills in a safe environment that is closer to the real world than the insulated “bubble” of rehab. Individual sessions are scheduled as necessary. Naltrexone and Vivitrol can be prescribed, as well as psychiatric medications, if necessary.
Therapy employs evidence-based practices such as CBT, EMDR and Motivational Interviewing (MI) with specialized sessions geared towards dual diagnosis support for PTSD, mood and eating disorders. Groups are kept small to maintain a sense of intimacy and trust, with only four to seven clients per group. The IOP consists of three group sessions a week for three hours each, with both daytime and evening slots available, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The daytime group meets from 10 am to 1 pm and the evening track meets 6 to 9 pm. True North encourages attendance at outside support groups but does not require any specific type or number of meetings.
In addition to the co-founders, the staff at True North locations consists of a psychiatric physician’s assistant, LPCs and LADCs.
Extras
Weekly family support groups offer ideas for facing common issues, like boundaries and co-dependency, as well as provide education about the disease of addiction.
