The Basics

At the turn of the century, a group of nuns, the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, inspired what would ultimately become Trinitas Hospital in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Offering diverse services for behavioral health, Trinitas provides a full continuum of care for adults and their families. While the only substance abuse services available are outpatient, the facility does offer dual diagnosis support and specialized treatment for pregnant and postpartum women and those with HIV/AIDS. Trinitas works to make treatment affordable, even offering a grant program for individuals who qualify, and provides services in Spanish as well as English.

Treatment and Staff

Trinitas offers an outpatient substance abuse program that may last between three and six months, depending on the client’s treatment goals. After a mental health professional conducts an assessment, clients meet with a case manager to create individualized treatment plans. Treatment consists primarily of individual and group therapy, as well as family therapy with the consent of the client.

Over the course of treatment, clients slowly transition from an intensive program to a less demanding one. At the beginning of treatment, clients participate in clinical activity up to five days a week. Groups discuss a number of issues, from domestic violence and anger management to HIV/AIDS awareness to alcohol and drug education. Some groups are gender-specific, allowing clients to explore issues and challenges they may not feel comfortable with discussing in a coed environment. As clients progress, the frequency of group may reduce to three or four times a week. Throughout treatment, clients have the benefit of receiving individual therapy at a minimum of once per week, with more sessions available as needed. While the program as a whole is not 12-step based, clients are encouraged to regularly attend AA or NA meetings and to get a sponsor.

Clients seeking substance abuse treatment may find the hospital a prime resource for addressing other issues. Trinitas offers a separate inpatient ward that deals specifically with dual diagnosis clients. The staff in this unit specialize in treating individuals with mental illness and other cognitive and developmental disabilities. Gambling addictions, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia are among the disorders that may be addressed in this context.

Approximately 10 to 15 staff work in Trinitas’ outpatient substance abuse program, including CADCs and LCSWs. There are no more than 12 clients at a time on each case manager’s caseload.

Extras

During Trinitas’ aftercare program, clients check in with a case manager once a week and attend a meeting with current outpatient clients for additional support.

Trinitas provides access to alternative therapies. Art therapy allows clients to express themselves in a new way. Occupational therapy is also available for clients who require assistance reintegrating back into the workforce.

In Summary

Recovery at Trinitas is not limited to substance abuse but offers a laundry list of resources through the hospital. Almost every possible concern can be referred to a program within the facility, providing clients full access to the care that they need. Trinitas also offers a wide range of financial assistance including a special grant for families and individuals who qualify. For those seeking affordable treatment for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders, Trinitas Hospital is New Jersey’s mental health care stronghold.
