The Basics
One of many recovery facilities in Los Angeles, Tri City Institute was founded in 1992. It provides outpatient Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opiates. Billed as an upscale narcotic replacement clinic, Tri City Institute is the only clinic of its kind licensed to travel anywhere in the world with its clients to prevent lapses in treatment.
Treatment and Staff
Tri City has two locations offering treatment, one in the Willowbrook section of Los Angeles and the other in Century City. Both of these clinics base their opiate recovery programs on the prescription and administration of methadone, Suboxone or buprenorphine (a generic form of Suboxone). The length of treatment varies, depending on the on-site doctor’s assessment—clients can be under Tri City’s care for 21, 30, 60 or 90 days. The doctor determines the course of treatment and clients get their dose from an on-site nurse. Typically, clients begin with daily treatments, then weekly and possibly monthly. Clients are also given random monthly drug screens.
Treatment at Tri City includes individual therapy and off-site 12-step meetings, scheduled on a per client basis. Clients typically see their counselors once per week, but that can be increased. Tri City is also equipped to offer dual diagnosis support. Some clients are mandated to attend two 12-step meetings a week, while others are only encouraged to attend and to find a sponsor. While Tri City does not facilitate transportation to meetings, they sometimes provide bus tokens.
To help clients with family issues, Tri City refers people to Alanon, CA, NA and AA. Please note they do not refer clients to programs or meetings that staff members themselves have not attended. Group therapy is not available at either location. However, if a client signs a consent form, Tri City facilitates a family session between the client and his or her family.
Each location employs six highly credentialed men and women—two nurses, one doctor and three counselors. Each counselor has a caseload of 40 to 45 clients. Tri City professionals in Willowbrook are available from 6:30 am to 3 pm—dosing ends at 1:30 pm—while their Century City people are available from 7 am to 3 pm, with dosing ending at 12:30 pm.
Extras
Tri City Institute can arrange for a nurse to travel with a client, or to meet that client at his or her destination, in order to ensure that neither treatment nor travel plans are interrupted. This is, of course, booked on a per client basis, at the client’s expense.
In addition to AA, Tri City also refers clients to SMART Recovery and Celebrate Recovery. They are also in the process of coordinating with local gyms to offer exercise services as part of treatment. And once a year, Tri City holds an appreciation party for clients and alumni.
In Summary
Tri City Institute is a methadone clinic with benefits—individual counseling, dual diagnosis support and the option of combining treatment with travel. Treatment is accessible to anyone, from those who have the means to travel with a nurse to those who may need a bus token to get to a 12-step meeting.
