Tree-HouseThe Basics

Founded in 2009 by Justin McMillen and located in Costa Mesa, California, Tree-House provides male-only sober living. Founded in 2012, Tree House Recovery, their sister program, provides outpatient substance abuse and addiction treatment services for men. Their mission is to provide a highly structured environment so that clients can focus on creating alcohol and drug-free healthy lives.

Accommodations and Amenities

Tree-House operates multiple single-family homes, which accommodate a total of approximately 90 clients. Tree-House proves itself on being environmentally friendly and the homes are filled with sustainable furnishings and eco-friendly products. Each house has between six and 18 residents. Lodgings vary, depending on the location. No more than three men, usually in the same age range, are housed in a dorm-style room. The bedrooms include wooden dressers, twin beds and lamps.

Men are responsible for purchasing their own groceries, and preparing their meals. These tasks are designed to teach basic life skills and healthy, organic eating is encouraged. Cooking is conducted in fully equipped kitchens. Amenities include Cable TV and Wi-Fi. A resident manager lives on the premises in each home.

Rules and Regulations

Prior to admission, the men must have undergone detox. During the first 30 days, clients must attend 30 12-step meetings. After that period, regular meetings are still required, but the quota varies per client. Some residents attend outpatient treatment at Tree House Recovery in Costa Mesa, but this is optional. Participation in the outpatient program is not required, but clients must be active and productive during the day. Other requirements include performing daily chores, building and maintaining an active relationship with a sponsor, and if unemployed or not in treatment, actively searching for work.

A typical daily schedule includes waking up, bathing, eating and doing chores between 8 am and 9 am, followed by leaving the house and if appropriate, searching for work between 9 am and 3 pm. Wednesday night includes an open AA fire pit meeting at one of the hoes between 7 pm and 8:30 pm, followed by a closed house meeting from 8:30 pm to 9 pm. On Sundays, residents must attend an outside 12-step meeting between 7 pm and 8:30 pm. The curfew is set for 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and one am on Fridays and Saturdays. Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. Tree-House practices a zero tolerance policy. Those who relapse are immediately evicted from the premises.

Extras

Tree-House uses a philosophy based upon the acronym RIBCART, as a source of motivation for residents. RIBCART stands for “Routine, Integrity, Balance, Care, Accountability, Responsibility, Teachable” which are virtues that Tree-House hopes to instill in their residents.

In Summary

Tree-House is a highly structured sober living home that takes recovery very seriously and expects the men to do the same. This structured living program and it’s companion outpatient treatment center, Tree House Recovery, provides a solid combination for clients who want to stay clean and sober, and get their lives back on track.
