Costa Mesa CaliforniaThe Basics

Founded in 2012, and located in Costa Mesa, California, Tree House Recovery provides a range of substance abuse treatment services, including an outpatient program and sober living homes for men. Clinical Director, Geoffery Blaylock and Physical Empowerment Director, Neal Trusso, who is a former US Navy Seal Team member, are at the helm. The program utilizes a holistic approach to treat chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders.

Treatment and Staff

The program length is between three and five months. Clients in treatment are offered the option of staying at Tree House Sober Living. While detox is not provided, referrals are made to local facilities if necessary. Typically, clients participate in a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), which includes 30 hours of care, Monday through Friday. Approximately 36 clients are accommodated, and divided evenly into three tracks, with no more than 12 clients per group.

Weekly treatment includes group therapy, individual therapy, yoga, nutrition counseling, addiction education and fitness therapy. Addiction education teaches the physiological and biological effects that occur from addiction. While the treatment team focuses on the mind/body connection, and believes that brain chemistry can be dramatically altered by physical activity, evidence-based modalities, including CBT, are utilized during group. Additionally, daily process groups where clients share and listen to their peers are incorporated during treatment.

Medication management is not provided, with the belief that tuning up the body through physical exercise is the antidote to depression and other co-occurring disorders. Besides Trusso and Blaylock, staff includes literary therapists, yoga therapists, CADCs, lifeguards, experiential therapists, and administrative support. Since there are three tracks, the client-to-staff ratio is almost one on one.

Extras

Clients can anticipate the use of literary therapy, which employs stream-of-consciousness writing, and allows clients to uncover hidden issues and emotions.

Experiential therapy, which this facility refers to as ABIT (Action Based Induction Therapy), includes the surf passage boat drills, used during navy seal training. Taught by Trusso, this component takes place at the beach, and involves teamwork, waves and an inflatable boat.

Clients also participate in Recovery in Action groups, which include a Spartan race and outdoor camping trips.

In Summary

Tree House Recovery offers many perks and a great location. It does not employ a 12-step based approach, so for those who want to work on their steps, this may not be the right place. On the other hand, this is a great program for men who want to employ physical fitness along with a scientific approach to addiction. Former clients rave about the energetic staff and credit the facility with the fact their lives are imbued with a new found energy and purpose.
