Atlanta GeorgiaThe Basics

Established in 1993, Transitional Family Services (TFS) provides specialized, short-term crisis management and psychotherapeutic intervention services to Georgia’s youth, adults and elderly. Unlike most facilities, TFS brings services to client’s homes for most treatments, though clients can choose to come to the office instead if they prefer. Using the Matrix Model approach, which stresses the importance of developing a family centered support system, TFS aims to empower each family member to live their most productive life and make ongoing changes, all while avoiding unnecessary institutionalization or placement of individuals outside the home.

Treatment and Staff

TFS uses an evidence-based approach called the Matrix Treatment Program which focuses on the entire family system and each of their behaviors instead of the feelings behind these behaviors. Clients seeking treatment can walk in and develop a treatment plan with a case manager. Detox is not available on-site, but a bed can be found at a nearby detox that day. For those who have completed detox or don’t require it, TFS offers in-home outpatient treatment track that includes individual and family therapy.

Treatment at TFS is not 12-step oriented, but clients are encouraged to seek whatever outside support they need. Therapy at home is usually once a week, but clients may come to the office instead, particularly if they need dual diagnosis support. Treatment can last anywhere form three months to two years, depending on the client and their needs.

Clients wishing to participate in group therapy may opt for a range of options that include anger management and family violence groups, grief therapy, group parenting, relationship therapy, divorce, sexual abuse groups, self-esteem groups, depression therapy and groups for anxiety and stress management.

TFS staff includes Master’s-level licensed therapists and psychiatrists who are qualified to provide medication management. Therapists are specialized and offer more intensive treatment options than basic outpatient if needed.

Extras

In addition, TFS offers in-home parenting classes, case management, parental fitness evaluations, CPS Investigations and Screen-outs and early intervention. These treatment options provided primary in the home and focus on the client-therapist bond.

In Summary

TFS is a community/family-focused crisis center that specializes in treatment of the whole family, focusing on the inter-related assets and strengths as well as liabilities between family members, the community and the environment in which they live. Medicaid and other state-funded agencies cover cost for many, but private insurance, FFS and self pay are also accepted.
