The Basics
Transcend Recovery Community provides gender specific sober living with six houses in the Los Angeles area and one in New York. The men’s houses are located in Beverly Hills and Pacific Palisades, with two in Santa Monica, just minutes away from sunny southern California beaches. There are two women’s houses, one in Venice and the other in Century City. While the digs may be luxurious, Transcend Recovery Community has parameters for residents that provide structure and safety without the regimen of a treatment center.
Accommodations and Amenities
Each house is eclectically furnished, accommodating eight to 12 residents at any given time. There are single rooms available for an extra fee, but most of the rooms are double occupancy. Residents sleep in either a queen or king size bed, each with their own nightstands, desks and dressers. One of the men’s houses is just steps from the Santa Monica pier and the sand, with a spectacular ocean front view. Residents can surf, skate along the beach and play paddle tennis or volleyball within minutes of leaving the house. The Palisades house for men also has an amazing view of the Pacific ocean. The two-story Mediterranean sports a full deck on each floor and a BBQ for outdoor cooking in the summer.
At the 26th Street house in Santa Monica, up to 12 men can use the recording studio on the ground floor and everyone has access to private boxing lessons. The backyard has a large pool, lanai area and a BBQ. The fourth house for men is at the top of Beverly Hills, with a magnificent city view. This house includes a pool with a Jacuzzi and a game room with a ping pong table.
The Holmby Avenue residence for women is a glamorous 12,000 square foot, two-story home located in Century City. Décor is beyond grand, with 12 foot ceilings, floor-to-ceiling drapes and a marble entryway. There are six bedrooms and five bathrooms. The backyard is luscious and green, with a separate patio area and built-in BBQ. The second women’s house is in Venice, just minutes from the Venice boardwalk. Rooms are spacious and airy, with hardwood floors, plenty of windows and an open BBQ pit in the backyard.
All six houses have at least three large flat screen TVs and are equipped with wifi, cable and Netflix. All Transcend Recovery clients get a gym membership included in the cost of residence. Three times a week, Transcend staff does the grocery shopping; clients are responsible for making their own breakfasts and lunch while dinner is prepared by a professional chef. Each residence has a live-in manager along with round-the-clock staff so clients are always supervised. Transcend Recovery also provides transportation to appointments, outside meetings and sober activities.
Rules and Regulations
Clients must be clean and sober and commit to a minimum stay of 30 days, with the typical stay rounding out at six months. There is a house group meeting every morning, facilitated by a licensed therapist. Every afternoon, there is either a lecture or a group facilitated by a staff member; topics include relapse prevention and dealing with triggers. For the first month, clients are at level one. They are required to attend five 12-step meetings a week and subjected to weekly drug testing. Weekday curfew is 11 pm and on 1 am on the weekends. Attendance slips are required and given to the house manager.
Clients are asked not to bring their cars for the first month. Transportation is provided by staff—a senior resident or sober 12-step member. At level two, residents are still drug tested, but have their own cars and only have to attend three 12-step meetings a week. By level three, residents are expected to be active participants in the 12-step community as well as seeking work. At this level, staff members assist with life skills like budgeting, creating resumes and job search strategies.
Extras
Transcend offers a Sober Mentoring Program which consists of men and women in recovery who are trained to support clients once they leave sober living. Mentors provide supervision, drug tests, home inspections, goal setting services and ongoing communication with family members.
A Family Director communicates with family members on a weekly basis. Every two months, there is a family weekend to provide education and support to family members. Acupuncture, meditation, mindfulness techniques, yoga, spiritual expression and book study are offered weekly to all levels.
In Summary
Transcend Recovery Community is a full-scale sober living enterprise, offering state-of-the-art accommodations. While this sort of luxury doesn’t come cheap—it costs more than many treatment centers—Transcend will surely appeal to those who desire (and can afford) sober living plus.
