Located 150 miles west of Charlotte in the small town of Lake Toxaway, Trails Carolina is a wilderness treatment program in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Trails specializes in the care of at-risk adolescent, teenage and young adults struggling with mental health and behavioral issues like depression, anxiety, self esteem, poor academic achievement, trauma, learning disorders, Internet addiction and substance use disorders. Founded in 2008, this CARF-accredited organization offers a comprehensive wilderness program that incorporates individual, group and family therapy as well as equine therapy, holistic methods and academics. Neither medication management nor the 12-step recovery model are components of the programming.

During the wilderness curriculum, students take in the incredible forest surroundings that include hiking, waterfalls and spectacular views from as high as 5,000 feet. The Trails campus is situated on a 500 acre property with upscale male and female sleeping cabins and a private lake. The meals are nutritious and tasty. Clients with allergies or dietary restrictions can be accommodated. Students also receive culinary training.
Treatment and Staff
Trails Carolina believes that each client has his or her own path. Before beginning, each client undergoes a comprehensive clinical assessment that helps the team best understand the specific needs of the individual. Based off the evaluation, an individualized care plan is designed rooted in wilderness therapy, assessments, holistic methods, psychological testing, family therapy and academics. While the length of stay varies from client to client, individuals must stay a minimum of 50 days to accrue academic credits. Students in the wilderness program engage in weekly individual and group therapy, regular wilderness outings, equine therapy, yoga and mindfulness meditation.
The Trails team is comprised of a primary therapist, family therapists, teachers, an equine specialist and field experts.
Trails believes that family involvement and support are integral components to the client’s health. To this end, the facility engages parents through every step of the process. The parents receive a weekly call from the therapist, a weekly letter from their child and participate in a parent workshop, as well as a five-day camp.
Students work closely with the Trails team to develop a sustainable aftercare system.
Trails Carolina offers a comprehensive curriculum for adolescents and young adults with mental health and behavioral issues. The bio-psycho-social approach employs an integrative care plan that includes wilderness therapy, individual and family therapy, holistic methods and equine therapy. Be it for depression, substance use disorder, ADHD, grief or academics, Trails provides a unique and powerful experience for the student and their family.
