The Basics
Townsend Outpatient first opened about six years ago and was recently purchased (in April 2016) by American Addiction Centers. Townsend offers substance abuse services out of seven locations in Louisiana: Baton Rouge, Covington, Houma, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Metairie and New Orleans. While the organization incorporates 12-step principles its treatment approach is based on the “biological model” which focuses on outpatient treatment rather than inpatient because it demands more accountability from clients who live independently.
Treatment and Staff
Entering the Townsend Outpatient program begins with a diagnostic interview for evaluation. Potential clients must be cleared by doctor to be accepted into the program and may be asked to go through outpatient detox, first, which Townsend provides. Usually clients take part in six weeks of the Townsend Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), starting at five days a week, attending three hour groups in evenings. Clients also meet with a medical doctor once a week and have an individual session with their assigned therapist, once a week. Townsend Outpatient has its own medical doctor on staff. It also employs admissions and treatment consultants, licensed counselors, as well as patient-care coordinators who take care of scheduling.
Extras
Family sessions are also available for those whose families want to take part. After completing the IOP, clients may move down to to aftercare, during which they still get to come in for treatment, only less frequently.
In Summary
Those considering getting treatment at one of Townsend’s seven locations also need to weigh whether the standard $10,000 to $12,000 package of detox and six weeks of intensive outpatient treatment is within their personal financial capabilities or covered by their insurance. In either case, visits with a doctor as well as any medication that may prove to be necessary during treatment is billed separately by Townsend and should be another factor which to consider.
