Touchstones Review
Founded in 1987, Social Model Recovery Systems is a non-profit organization providing treatment at 12 different locations throughout Los Angeles and Orange County, California. Primarily focusing on a social model of recovery, clients serve as role models for each other sharing their experience in recovery. The residential program for adolescents is called Touchstones and is a CARF-accredited program focusing on treatment for substance abuse.
Accommodations and Food
The Touchstone facility is in a quiet, residential neighborhood in suburban Orange, California and can accommodate up to 23 clients at a time. Residents share double-occupancy quarters with one roommate in gender-segregated hallways. Each wing has one shared, dorm-style bathroom. The facility also has an on-site workout facility and a fully equipped kitchen where staff prepares and serves three meals a day plus snacks.
Treatment and Staff
To be admitted into Touchstones, clients must be at a 9th grade school level and younger than 18. Since the facility is not a hospital, perspective clients must also be free from severe medical problems and fully willing to seek recovery for their issues.
After an initial assessment, clients begin a treatment program which includes group, individual and family therapy. Groups help residents develop coping skills, self-worth and focus on changing negative behaviors through CBT. All clients are required to attend daily AA/NA meetings with transportation provided.
Clients must also keep up with their academic studies by attending classes at the on-site school. The pace of studies ensure that many residents end up further ahead on credits than they would be otherwise. Recreational activities are also worked into the treatment schedule including day trips to plays, dances and amusement parks.
In addition to residential care, Touchstones offers an outpatient program for clients between the ages of 11 and 22 who have a psychiatric diagnosis incorporating treatment for co-occurring disorders. The duration of this program varies from one to six months.
Staff consists of trained specialists with experience working with children in recovery with a one-to-two staff-to-client ratio. Specialists include MFTIs and CAADEs.
Extras
Given the age demographic of the clientele, family participation is an important part of the Touchstones program. Education and counseling groups are held regularly for parents helping them to learn how to best support their children throughout recovery. Aftercare is available via alumni support groups where peers can discuss their journey in early recovery. Finally, Touchstones’ parent organization, Social Model Recovery Centers, has a range of residential programs for adults as well. A full list can be found on their website.
