The Basics

Total Health Resources (THR) has been offering outpatient substance abuse treatment at an affordable cost in Silver Spring, Maryland, a Washington, D.C., suburb, since 2003. In addition to serving those who struggle with chemical addiction, it provides community resources for children, adolescents and families. THR offers treatment in both English and Spanish and has staff members who are trained to work in a multicultural environment.

Treatment and Staff

THR has two levels of outpatient therapy—early intervention and regular outpatient. They do not have a 12-step component or detox services, but they are connected to many other health care providers, so clients who need additional services are given referrals to those resources. Treatment for dual diagnosis is available at THR, with those needing medication management and psychiatric treatment being referred to the staff psychiatrist.

Clients seeking treatment first meet with a licensed psychotherapist for an in-depth substance abuse, psychosocial and psychiatric evaluation that lasts between two and three hours. After discussing clients’ needs and goals, an individualized treatment plan is developed. Treatment at THR consists mostly of individual therapy sessions with either a an LADC or a psychotherapist. There are group activities for those who need help with parenting skills, life skills and dual diagnosis support.

Individual therapy modalities vary according to the client. Those who have a dual diagnosis are seen by a psychotherapist and those with only substance abuse issues typically have sessions with a drug and alcohol counselor. The program can include CBT, relapse prevention, medication management, goal-setting, psychoeducation and drug and alcohol education. The goal of the program is for clients to learn about themselves and their addiction so they are able to make sound decisions in their sober lives.

Regular outpatient treatment typically lasts around 12 weeks, with clients meeting with their therapist every week. The schedule can be changed if necessary. The early intervention program may be  shorter depending on the client.

The clinic is very small with just two counselors, a psychotherapist and a drug and alcohol counselor. But clients get a high level of individualized attention given that for the most part, they meet one-on-one with staff members. Group therapy sizes are kept small as well, with fewer than 10 people for each session.

THR’s operating hours are Monday through Thursday, 11 am to 8 pm, and Friday 11 am to 2 pm.

Extras

THR’s outpatient program is part of a broad medical network that also provides medical care and psychiatric care. In addition, they offer a DUI program for those who are court-ordered. It consists of 12 hour-long alcohol education classes that are offered in either English or Spanish.

Aftercare and family counseling sessions are also available to clients and their families.

In Summary

For those interested in an affordable and low-level substance abuse treatment plan that doesn’t involve too much disruption to work and school, Total Health Resources may be a good option. It’s particularly suitable for those who are in the early stages of substance abuse.
