Top of the World Ranch Treatment Centre Review
Located about an hour from the border of Washington state in Fort Steele, British Columbia, Canada, Top of the World Ranch Treatment Centre is a detox and residential rehab facility. As the name suggests, the ranch offers a majestic location in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, as well as holistic methods to treat a variety of addictions. The programs include psychoeducation, individualized care, an introduction to the 12 steps and extensive continuing care for adult men and women.
Accommodations and Food
The Top of the World treatment facility is located on 600 acres of land of what used to be a working cattle ranch. There are six individual cabins that offer private bedrooms and bathrooms and suites on the property with a total of 28 beds available. There is also a detox facility on the grounds with four beds that also provides private bedrooms and bathrooms in each room. All the bedrooms are furnished with full beds, dressers, a small desk and lounge chair as well as storage space. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and provide each person with a quiet, private place to unwind at the end of the day.
The main treatment building is a large lodge-style home where a majority of the programming, like counseling and group therapy, takes place. This section of the facility is about 9,000 square feet with luxurious amenities like plush leather couches in front of a huge stone fireplace and a wrap-around deck that encompasses the entire facility so clients can get a 360 degree view of the epic scenery on rocking chairs and reclined benches. The dining room has several long tables where clients can enjoy meals together, and the several living rooms have flat screen televisions mounted on the walls. Speaking of meals, there are three on-site chefs that prepare gourmet meals daily. The food is made from the freshest ingredients and the menus are healthy and hearty.
Treatment and Staff
The individualized programs offer a variety of therapeutic methods, two individual therapy sessions weekly and several group sessions and educational lectures and classes daily. Treatment is evidence-based and client centered, focusing on self-care, coping skills and relapse prevention techniques. The treatment programs are co-ed, though there are gender specific groups offered every week.
Depending on the clients specific needs CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and EMDR are common therapy approaches, as well as more holistic methods like equine therapy, yoga, mindfulness and meditation and Tai Chi. And though the program isn’t exclusively based on the 12-step philosophy there are five mandatory AA or NA meetings per week that clients attend off-site.
The staff brings many years of hands on experience working with different types of addiction to their clients. The clinical and medical staff includes physicians, LPNs, CADCs and psychologists.
Extras
The grounds contain several therapeutic features including a recently constructed tower that gives clients an opportunity to take in the Rocky Mountain views to new heights, and a private log cabin called the poustinia where clients can meditate or read in silence, and the sweat lodge. There is also gym with state of the art equipment and sauna. There are plenty of recreational activities provided at Top of the World, like horseback riding, nature hikes and world-class fishing. The two lakes, Goose and Loon, are perfect for canoeing and the fire pits offer a great place for clients to sit and chat after dinner.
Every six weeks there is an intensive family program at the facility for partners and children who are 16 and older. This includes counseling and educational lectures. An aftercare plan is put in place during the clients stay at the facility and includes several follow up phone or in person therapy sessions.
