Tomah WisconsinTomah Veteran’s Administration Medical Center Review

Located in the small Central Wisconsin city of Tomah, the Tomah Veteran’s Administration Medical Center mental health department provides inpatient substance abuse treatment through its Substance Abuse Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (SARRTP).

The Tomah VA opened its doors in 1947 and provides a full range of primary care, behavioral health and social services. In addition to the SARRTP, the Behavioral Health department provides outpatient substance abuse services in the form of individual and group therapy as well as aftercare services for those who have completed the SARRTP or another structured treatment program.

Accommodations and Food

The SARRTP unit has 22 beds and treats both men and women. Residents have roommates, though a few private rooms are available on occasion, depending upon availability. Residents can bring cell phones as well as one additional small electronic device—such as a laptop or tablet.

The facility has day rooms with computers and a TV, and the grounds feature a library and recreational facility. Residents take their meals in the medical center’s full-service cafeteria and snacks are brought to the residential unit throughout the day. Residents can also purchase snacks in the medical center’s cafe.

Treatment and Staff

Most residents stay in SATRRP for 35 days. Upon admission, they’re given a treatment plan that includes daily group and one-on-one sessions and psychoeducation classes that focus on life skills and addiction topics. Daily groups start at 8 am and use the 12-step framework, CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and other evidence-based methods. Most treatment plans include peer support meetings, and the medical center hosts weekly AA/NA and SMART Recovery meetings.

The treatment team includes MSWs, psychologists and addiction counselors with the SAC or CSAC credential. Those with co-occurring disorders can receive additional treatment by psychiatrists in the mental health department in the medical center. Clients who have endured sexual assault trauma are referred out to a nearby mental health clinic for treatment, and clients who are dealing with PTSD can attend a nine-week combat-related PTSD therapy group in the medical center.

Extras

After completing treatment at SATRRP, clients are expected to continue with aftercare at Tomah, either in its weekly relapse prevention group, individual therapy, or—ideally—both. The SATTRP hosts a periodic Support Recovery Day, where families of residents are invited to the facility to learn more about addiction and recovery. The Tomah VA mental health department also offers a group for gambling addicts.

In Summary

Tomah VA’s Substance Abuse Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program provides intensive inpatient substance abuse treatment to Veterans. With its comfortable amenities, on-site peer support meetings and integrated treatment with its mental health department, the Tomah VA creates an environment of social and medical support to help our Veterans identify and work towards their treatment goals.
