The Basics

Together Recovery Works Associates is a small, outpatient-only program that has been treating clients in Bel Air, Maryland since 1985. With two locations and a total of 10 employees, TRW’s program focuses on recovery from alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, heroin, opiate and mood-altering abuse. Many of TRW’s clients are referrals from the court system for DUI convictions.

Treatment and Staff

After an initial evaluation, clients are likely to be enrolled in a group therapy treatment plan. Typically, the only clients at TRW who receive individual therapy are those who have been ordered to do so by the courts.

In keeping with TRW’s philosophy that each person stays sober in his or her own way, group sessions at TRW involve a range of treatment modalities, including CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). While the program uses evidence-based treatments, some aspects of the 12 steps are incorporated into treatment for some patients.

When not determined by court order, the length of TRW’s treatment programs varies from individual to individual. Some clients may need only six weeks of treatment (although this is rare), while some may need 26 weeks or even longer.

TRW’s 12-week substance abuse program is intended for those who do not indicate an ongoing alcohol or other drug problem, but who have been charged with an alcohol- or drug-related offense. This program is largely educational, focusing on providing information about the physical effects of alcohol and other drugs and the personal and legal consequences of abuse.

For more serious substance abuse issues, TRW offers its voluntary TARGET program. The curriculum is geared toward chronic relapsers and those who have suffered serious legal consequences connected to substance abuse, and clients attend two to three group sessions per week. While it is not an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), it may be alternative to inpatient treatment for some clients.

TRW’s clients are split about evenly between people who attend because of court orders, those attending as a condition of their continued employment and clients who are there of their own volition.

TRW does not have a medical doctor on site and detox is not offered. It does not offer support for those with a dual diagnosis, although it will refer that population elsewhere.

There are 10 staff members at TRW and, of those, seven are clinicians. All of TRW’s therapists are CSACs and the social worker on staff has a Master’s degree in counseling.

TRW accepts no insurance; it is strictly self-pay, although they are willing to work with any client when it comes to fees. The average cost is $40 a session, with an evaluation fee of $75.

In Summary

With over 30 years of experience providing court-directed care to clients with DUI convictions, TRW is the best—and only—program that can satisfy court orders in Harford County. As for voluntary clients, TRW’s TARGET track is an economical and excellent choice for the individual with a history of relapse.
