The Basics
Based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Todd Ware is the founder of Ware Interventions, which specializes in intervention services with a particular focus on young people. Ware is a certified addiction professional who is also qualified to provide dual diagnosis care. He offers his services for those struggling with sex, gambling and internet addiction as well as substance abuse. Though Ware is based in Vancouver, he travels anywhere in the US and Canada. Ware Interventions also employs an addiction counselor and recovery coach, who is a staff member at the Westminster House Recovery Centre for Women.
The Background
Like many in his field, Ware’s story is born out of his personal experience with addiction. Sober for over 17 years, Ware’s own interaction with a straight-shooting interventionist convinced him to begin recovery and set the course for his life’s work. To that end, Ware has an extensive pedigree that he brings to his practice, having spent 15 years in the addiction field, working as an intervention professional, addiction recovery program coordinator, violence prevention specialist, youth counselor and life skills coordinator at such institutions as Vancouver Coastal Health and the West Vancouver School District.
The Approach
Ware’s approach to interventions is extremely family-oriented, both before and after the intervention. After an initial consultation, usually by phone, Ware holds a meet-and-greet session with family members. This is followed by a planning session held with those who will be present during the intervention. From there, he helps families map out a proposed treatment plan as well as pre-treatment details such as organizing transportation to rehab and/or detox, which Ware can provide. Finally, there is an intervention rehearsal. Ware utilizes the three most common models of intervention, namely the Arise, Johnson and Family Systemic Models, and generally lets each unique situation determine which is the best course to follow. For Ware, the ultimate goal is a treatment program that best fits the client’s needs and financial considerations. While he is not allied with a particular facility, his working knowledge of the industry allows him to recommend various programs based on the aforementioned goals. Similarly, Ware promotes 12-step recovery, including Alanon for family members, but allows clients to create their own path of recovery with the ultimate deciding factor being the overall effectiveness of the plan.
Post-Intervention and Summary
For Ware, the intervention process is merely the beginning of a long journey of recovery and he thus provides ongoing, long-term contact and aftercare following the intervention. Ware keeps in touch with clients during treatment and also assists in advising the family with practical advice and planning.
