The Basics

Located in the coastal town of Tillamook, Oregon, Tillamook Family Counseling Center has been providing affordable behavioral health services for over 25 years. This facility offers evidence-based outpatient treatment not only for substance abuse, but also for co-occurring disorders and trauma, in the green of the Pacific Northwest.

Treatment and Staff

Tillamook Family Counseling Center is a dual diagnosis facility where mental health and addiction services are integrated. All clients are assessed individually, so length and scope of involvement in the program are not predetermined. The initial intake entails 15 minutes of paperwork. From there, a clinician gives clients a 90-minute behavioral health assessment, where each person provides a full substance abuse history. In the second session, clients discuss prevention planning with their counselors, writing down their needs and goals and discussing whether they need group, individual therapy or both. Typically, clients attend groups at least twice a week. The curriculum includes a myriad of treatment methods including CBT, DBT, EMDR and Seeking Safety. In addition to groups, clients receive one-on-one sessions at least once a week.

Tillamook Family Counseling Center does not facilitate 12-step meetings and clients are not required to acquire a sponsor, though it is encouraged. Clients can obtain referrals to community meetings. Tillamook Family Counseling Center also recommends Celebrate Recovery for those who may have an aversion to traditional 12-step meetings.

Tillamook employs 11 clinicians, all of whom are Master’s-level or higher and five of whom are CADCs. There’s also a case manager and a peer-support partner. The psychiatry staff consists of five MDs and one PMNHP, while the counseling staff is made up of three MAs, one MS, one MSW, two CADCs and one LCSW. These professionals lead groups of 10 to 12, making for a staff-to-client ratio of one-to-eight (or 12, depending on the census.) There are three male staffers, while the others are women. Clients have access to their counselors Monday through Friday from 8 am to 6 pm. Three of the primary counselors have been trained in trauma therapy.

Extras

This facility understands the importance of family and friends, so its family program welcomes loved ones to sessions with clients, their own individual sessions and group family nights.

On the information board at the counseling center, clients can find a list of sober activities they can do, including walks along the beach, outings to the movies, bowling, even fishing. In this small town, Tillamook Family Counseling Center also maintains strong relationships with local employers so they can provide support for current employees and connect clients looking for work with local prospects. Should a client fail a drug test, Tillamook Family Counseling Center suggests extra services to maintain sobriety, like increasing the commitment to treatment, or helping to find residential care. The outpatient center also conveniently has a secondary location in Wheeler, Oregon.

In Summary

As a small town facility, Tillamook Family Counseling Center caters to local clients in the immediate community. Still, the clinical staff members are highly credentialed and Tillamook Family Counseling Center offers evidence-based treatment for trauma that isn’t always available, even at larger facilities. And with group sizes of close to 10 members, people are given the opportunity to develop a sober support network.
