henryetta oklahomaTiger Mountain Recovery Review

Located in Henryetta, Oklahoma, Tiger Mountain Recovery offers a women’s-only residential program for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. The greatest strength of this program is its blend of traditional, alternative and holistic treatment approaches, specifically its extensive use of equine therapy to support total wellness as women recover. Twelve-step support is also worked into treatment as is nutrition education and medical care.

Accommodations and Food

This 10-bed facility is located on quiet, rolling acres of rural land. The lodge-like home is spacious with expansive windows with views of the hills, woods and lake. Women share comfortable bedrooms and bathrooms with one other person, each room typically with pleasant views of the grounds beyond. All bedrooms come with basic furnishings including twin beds, desks and dressers. Additionally, there are common areas with a large-screen TV and comfortable leather lounge chairs.

In the warm summer months, women swim, hike, kayak, fish and enjoy tubing in the lake. During the colder months, residents enjoy the in-house billiards table, on-site workout equipment, yoga, Pilates classes, board games and arts and crafts. Potential clients should note that off-site outings are infrequent at Tiger Mountain—there are no scheduled excursions and unless a pass is approved to visit with family or friends, residents remain on campus grounds for the entirety of their stay. For those who smoke, cigarettes are permitted during break times.

Three home-cooked meals are provided each day and are served family-style with women sitting together at a long dining table. The staff cook always takes into consideration both health and taste when preparing breakfast, lunch and dinner and also accommodate dietary requests and allergies. When finished eating, the women help clean up as a way of developing responsibility and life-skills.

Treatment and Staff

TMR aims to provide a comprehensive recovery program, instilling a sense of independence and confidence in women who attend. Although treatment length varies from client to client, 90-day stays are recommended. Prior to beginning the program, clients undergo an initial evaluation. Transportation to the facility is available at no additional cost, though detox is not offered.

The treatment approach is based on the principles of AA as well as evidence-based therapies including CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Residents participate in weekly individual and daily group therapy sessions, covering topics like trauma recovery, life skills, self-esteem, spirituality, 12-step work and stress reduction. There is also health and nutrition education. Additionally, one on-site and one off-site AA/NA meeting are offered each week. Step work is also discussed frequently during therapy sessions.

In addition to traditional talk therapy, a unique feature of this program is its comprehensive equine program. With an on-site stable, women interact with horses on a daily basis. Additionally, residents have daily chores such as feeding and watering the animals to build a sense of responsibility and dependability. The women also meet with an equine trainer four times a week to learn how to care for and interact with the horses. This program affords clients the chance to create and maintain bonds, work through fears and to air out repressed emotions. For those suffering from mental health issues, support for co-occurring disorders is also available through therapy and medication management.

The staff at TMR consists of psychiatrists, Master’s-level therapists, LADCs, CADCs, LCSWs, case managers and the equine director.

Extras

TMR also runs The Henry House, a women’s-only sober living facility. This allows for an opportunity to step down in treatment and have continued support following the completion of primary residential care.

In Summary

Tiger Mountain Recovery offers a supportive sober retreat-like environment for women. Being immersed in nature and living in a sober-supportive community, clients begin to heal from the inside out. Through an extensive equine therapy program, evidence based treatment methods and the 12-steps, all residents are guided through the principles of long-term sobriety. Overall, this a great option for nature lovers and for those in need of an intimate and intensive program.
