The Basics
Tidewater Psychotherapy Services in Virginia Beach is a behavioral health facility with over 20 years of experience serving the Chesapeake Bay area. At TPS, adolescent boys and adults are offered outpatient treatment options for mental health and substance abuse through group, individual and family therapy sessions. A team of skilled therapists use evidence-based modalities such as CBT and psychodynamic therapy to treat clients.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at TPS includes an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) as well as traditional outpatient programs . All potential clients need to take part in an initial assessment used to determine the proper program for their needs.
The adult IOP is a six-week course which includes four random drug screenings throughout treatment. Clients attend three-hour group meetings three days a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Meeting times are available from noon to 3 pm while evening sessions are available from 6 to 9 pm.
For those requiring less structure, standard outpatient care lasts for 14 weeks and requires only two random drug screenings. Clients must attend one to two group sessions a week, depending on their evaluation results with meetings available on Wednesdays from 12:30 to 2 pm or Thursdays from 5:45 to 7:15 pm or from 7:30 to 9 pm.
Group meetings are always led by one of the staff’s certified therapists, and cover a variety of topics including relapse prevention, addiction as disease, anger management, coping skills and communication skills. Some groups have a traditional talk therapy approach where clients sit in a circle and openly share in response to the topic at hand, while other groups might screen educational videos on the negative affects of substance abuse.
Clients are also offered individual therapy sessions, scheduled as needed. Family members are also invited to take part in therapy sessions, though this is arranged only upon request. Psychiatric medication management for adults dealing with co-occurring disorders is available when applicable.
Aside from the adult program, Tidewater also has a program for adolescent boys. After an initial assessment, clients are recommended to attend either individual or group therapy (or very rarely, both). For those who enroll in group therapy, treatment is typically eight weeks long and requires four drug screenings. Group sessions are held once a week on Wednesday evenings from 5 to 6 pm. In these meetings adolescents are educated on the psychological, physical and emotional aspects of addiction. Topics include relapse prevention, the health and safety risks associated with drug and alcohol abuse, DUI education and support for co-occurring disorders.
For those assigned to individual therapy, each program is personalized though attendance of at least one individual session a week for an hour to an hour and a half is mandatory. There is no specific length for those attending only individual therapy sessions. Drug tests in both adolescent outpatient programs are compulsory, but random.
The staff consists of LPCs, LCSWs and a psychiatrist.
