The mission of Therapeutic Health Services is to restore the lives of those affected by chemical dependency and mental illness. Founded in Seattle in 1972, it now operates nine outpatient locations throughout King and Snohomish counties. Dual diagnosis support is an option and Therapeutic Health Services’ staff are both skilled addiction educators and mental health experts.
Treatment and Staff
Therapeutic Health Services is equipped to treat people at any age; one of their locations is dedicated to adolescents but their average client is between 41 and 65 years of age.
Outpatient treatment for drugs and alcohol is offered at several locations and the programming is more or less uniform across the board—which is comforting for those who can’t commute. Therapeutic Health Services is not centered on the 12 steps. It encourages clients to seek supplemental help through outside support groups but they do not necessarily advocate for any specific one.
The program is structured in three phases. Phase One focuses on early intervention and the educational component of treatment. Clients attend three sessions a week for three hours. As a group, they go to interactive lectures and receive written assignments. Each educational session is immediately followed by group therapy. Clients must dedicate a minimum of 72 hours to their recovery at Therapeutic Health Services to successfully complete this phase.
Phase Two admission depends on attendance and progress during the first phase. This phase meets once a week for a therapeutic group facilitated by chemical dependency specialists. The goals are to foster peer interaction and teach life skills. Phase Three is a monthly process group focused on personal growth and recovery. This phase concludes with a solid plan for relapse prevention. As clients progress through the phases, they see a counselor for individual therapy on a regular basis—usually once a week but a minimum of once a month.
Dual diagnosis clients are treated at select locations, through the Integrated Cognitive Therapies Program that Therapeutic Health Services developed with the University of Colorado at Denver. Behavioral issues that result from co-occurring disorders are addressed through Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET).
This organization takes great steps to accommodate minority clientele. A lot of the employees are bilingual and they actively work with community organizations to make sure their treatment is culturally sensitive.
Therapeutic Health Services offers additional resources such as extended education with parenting classes, nutritional counseling and resume building/job searching assistance.
Although Therapeutic Health Services employs an extensive network of psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, nurse practitioners and social workers, the program is primarily facilitated by licensed chemical dependency counselors. The medical professionals employed are focused on treating dual diagnosis clients.
Therapeutic Health Services’ many locations make it an accessible option for citizens in the Seattle and greater Puget Sound area. Affordable treatment, dual diagnosis services and an adolescent facility are the major assets offered by this organization.
