The Basics

Located Frederick, Maryland, The Youth Ranch is a non-profit community organization that was founded in 1974 by the Maryland Sheriffs’ Association to provide assistance for troubled and homeless boys in Maryland. In 2015, the Ranch expanded and shifted its focus to provide a wide variety of programs. Today, in addition to residential treatment for men with substance abuse issues, The Ranch offers a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for men and women and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for men, women and adolescents with substance abuse issues. Treatment implements evidence-based practices in addition to 12-step support and individualized care.

Treatment and Staff

The outpatient treatment programs provide structured care based on the client’s specific needs and goals. During PHP, which is only available to adults, clients partake in full-week, all-day intensive treatment with just a little bit more freedom than an inpatient setting. This program is designed for those who need a high level of care, but have a safe place to live. The IOP, which is offered to adults and adolescents, steps down to between three and five days per week of treatment, three hours per day. Due to the individualized nature of this program, there is no set treatment length.

Days in both programs consist of both group and individual therapy. Some of the groups consist of the entire client population, while others are broken into smaller gender or age-specific groups. Sessions can address topics like relapse prevention, stress management, mindfulness and life skills. There are also individual sessions, scheduled as needed for each client. Treatment offers a variety of therapeutic approaches like CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI), as well as some AA and NA based methodologies.

On a regular basis the staff meets to discuss each client’s progress. The Youth Ranch Outpatient staff credentials include LADCs and CSWs.

Extras

In addition to therapy and treatment, the facility also aids in vocational training and interview prep skills. This facility offers a family program that includes psychoeducation and counseling. Family involvement is required for those in the adolescent IOP track.

In Summary

The outpatient programs offered through The Youth Ranch are comprehensive and client-centered, providing a solid foundation for recovery. Treatment is designed to offer coping tools and life skills to ease the transition that guides clients back into independent, sober life at their own pace.
