The Basics

The Way Out Recovery opened its doors in May 2017 to provide outpatient substance abuse treatment to adults and adolescents in northern Los Angeles’ Santa Clarita Valley. The Way Out incorporates experiential therapy into its treatment plans, such as drum therapy and outdoor activities, and coordinates care with clients’ outside psychiatrists and, in the case of its adolescent clients, school counselors.

The Way Out was founded by the Berman Family, who have struggled with addiction and desired to create an effective outpatient program to help clients and their families heal from the trauma created by the disease. The Way Out’s program director is Bob Sharits, CADC, a long-time resident of the Santa Clarita Valley who is also in recovery.

Treatment and Staff

Most clients enter treatment at the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) level of care, which requires clients to attend group therapy three times each week. Some clients, however, may benefit from attending treatment more often, at the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) level of care. PHP clients attend group therapy each weekday. All clients have individual therapy at least once a week. The duration of treatment is progress-based, but an average treatment plan lasts three months. PHP clients often step-down to the IOP level as they stabilize.

Groups are led by CADCs and CATCs and MFTs. Therapy uses CBT and other evidence-based modalities to help clients develop coping skills, create boundaries and manage the effects of cross-addiction. The Way Out also incorporates Health Rhythms, a drum therapy program, outdoor activities and nutritional counseling into each treatment plan.

While The Way Out doesn’t provide comprehensive dual-diagnosis support, its clinicians are happy to work with a client’s outside mental health team to provide coordinated care. The Way Out can also work with its adolescent clients’ social workers and academic team. Clients are also strongly encouraged to attend peer support meetings, such as 12-step or SMART Recovery, while in outpatient treatment.

Extras

Family treatment is a core component of The Way Out’s approach to recovery. It provides a supportive multi-family therapy group each week as well as individual family therapy. All clients have the opportunity to explore how addiction has affected their family systems and how their genetic makeup impacts their disease.

For aftercare, clients are invited to attend a weekly relapse prevention group. The Way Out hosts The Recovery Hour podcast, which interviews guests about their recovery journeys and discusses recovery topics relevant to the southern California recovery community.

In Summary

The Way Out Recovery offers holistic and supportive outpatient treatment than helps clients heal their family systems. Its non-punitive approach to recovery ensures that all clients feel empowered to take control of their sobriety and create a life that inspires them to stay healthy and engaged in their recovery.
