The Basics
The Transformation Center is located in Cordova, Tennessee, a suburb of Memphis. It’s an eating disorder and trauma oriented outpatient facility with gender-specific care. There is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) specifically for adolescents and women but additional offerings include an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for women with eating disorders and an IOP for women and men who are in need of treatment related to trauma. Throughout treatment clients participate in group and individual therapy led by eating disorder and trauma specialists who offer a variety of treatment approaches. The Transformation Center opened its doors in 2001 and was the first facility to offer IOP treatment for eating disorders in the Memphis area.
Treatment and Staff
The PHP and IOP take place in a home-like facility that is both private and welcoming. During the initial assessment, clients sit down with a staff therapist and discuss their current struggles and symptoms. Depending on what the client’s needs are and the severity of their symptoms, he or she is placed into either of the treatment tracks. The PHP is a five days a week, five hour a day program and the IOP consists of three hours per day, three times a week. If an incoming client is stable with moderate symptoms, he or she is usually able to begin in the IOP, though oftentimes that track is considered a step-down from the PHP.
Each client can expect individualized treatment in either track. There are several individual sessions per week, along with a number of group therapy meetings daily. The PHP also differs from the IOP in that there are two supervised meals per day, medication management and regular outings to the grocery store.
The program is based on a wellness model that looks to treat the whole person and not just the symptoms. This approach is holistic and opposed to a 12-step philosophy. Treatment can include CBT, DBT, EMDR, mindfulness, exposure and experiential therapies.
The staff of The Transformation Center are Master’s-level therapists who specialize in both trauma and eating disorders.
