The Basics

The Townhouse on Sixth is a luxury, boutique sober living home designed specifically for women in early recovery from addiction. Women of all ages are welcome, but the average client is between 19 and 30. Located in Brooklyn’s historic Park Slope neighborhood, The Townhouse on Sixth provides a serene escape in the middle of the City. The Townhouse on Sixth helps clients maintain sobriety through a family environment, structured, 12-step treatment plan and personal case management.

Accommodations and Amenities

The Townhouse on Sixth houses clients in beautiful, completely renovated three-story townhouse. The house offers rooms two double-occupancy guest rooms, each is totally soundproofed, with stylish and luxurious linens, full-sized beds, TVs, modern furnishings and plenty of space for personal items and lounging. To allow the women to exclusively focus on recovery, maid and laundry services are provided.

The common areas include a living room with TV, plush throw-pillows and a communal dining room. There is a beautiful outdoor zen garden meditation area in the backyard. Clients enjoy meals prepared by the private cook in a fully equipped kitchen. The cook gladly accommodates all dietary restrictions and requests and enjoys creating made-to-order dishes to suit the clients’ tastes.

Treatment and Staff

Women typically come to The Townhouse on Sixth from a detox or a 28-day inpatient program and all potential clients must be mentally and physically stable prior to moving in. They undergo an interview and screening process with the owner, Dawn Marie Gallagher, to ensure they are a good fit for the house. Gallagher also takes the time to talk to parents or family members to involve them in the process and make sure they understand their loved ones will be in a safe place. Clients with co-occurring disorders requiring meds benefit from medication management by staff and all prescribed drugs are kept under lock and key.

The Townhouse on Sixth expects the women to fully immerse themselves in the sober way of life. This means they are required to work, attend school, volunteer or go to an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) during the day. They must attend four or five 12-step meetings per week and get involved with service and sponsorship. Life at Townhouse also includes enforced curfews, individual responsibilities and chores and random drug testing. While there is a zero tolerance policy for those who relapse, Gallagher works with the women on a case-by-case basis and makes arrangements for those who need detox, an inpatient program or want to come back.

Extras

In addition to the luxurious home and the thorough recovery support, extra perks at The Townhouse on Sixth include two adorable house-dogs, Charlie and Zoro, who provide companionship and comfort for the clients.

Sober companion services are available for an additional charge. The women are taken on organized recovery outings like trips to the beach, movies or rock climbing excursions.

Every resident is given an unlimited metro card and a gym membership.

In Summary

The Townhouse on Sixth offers a safe place for women who need some help getting a start in recovery. Townhouse provides a safe and nurturing environment for recovering women, while also pushing them to learn how to maintain their sobriety once they are released. Luxuries and the comforts of home are available—such as Internet, cable, a meditation area and pets—but there is also structure. Required 12-step meetings and drug testing help make The Townhouse on Sixth is an excellent choice for women in the NYC area seeking a comfortable place to adjust to daily life in recovery.
