The Basics
For over 40 years, The Swanson Center has provided mental health and substance abuse treatment services to the residents of LaPorte, a county in Northern Indiana on Lake Michigan. The Swanson Center offers outpatient treatment at its Michigan City and LaPorte locations.
In addition to its substance abuse treatment, The Swanson Center has a Problem Gambler Treatment Program and operates PATH—Projects for Assistance in Transition from Homelessness—an assembly of initiatives that support homeless clients suffering from mental health disorders and addictions. Additionally, the facility began the program Recovery Center Connection with Porter-Starke Services, which offers Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid addicts in the nearby city of Valparaiso.
Treatment and Staff
After an assessment, clients are placed in either the standard track or the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Clients in standard outpatient attend group therapy once or twice a week and have individual therapy as-needed. Those enrolled in the IOP attend group therapy three times a week and have one-on-one sessions once a week. Most clients complete their treatment plan within three months.
The treatment team at Swanson includes Master’s-level therapists such as MFTs and addiction counselors with the CADC and LCAC credentials. Staff is qualified to treat clients with co-occurring disorders through its behavioral health department, which has extensive experience with adults and adolescents with mild to severe mental health diagnoses.
The treatment team highly encourages clients to seek peer support meetings—such as 12-step, Celebrate Recovery or SMART Recovery—while in treatment. It’s also able to provide case management services and referrals to inpatient programs and detox facilities should a client need a higher level of care.
Extras
Family members of clients are encouraged to attend individual therapy sessions with the client—at the discretion of the treatment team—to learn more about addiction and recovery. For aftercare, clients can attend an on-going weekly relapse prevention group.

The Swanson Center’s outpatient locations provide the residents of LaPorte County with two traditional treatment tracks using evidence-based therapy and encouragement to seek peer support groups. With its extensive services for families and children, The Swanson Center might be an especially strong choice for addicts who wish to stabilize their families and heal them from the effects of their addiction.
