The Basics
Founded in 1991, The Retreat is a non-profit treatment organization that operates a large residential rehab facility and six sober living homes in the Minneapolis, Minnesota area. Catering to both men and women, these transitional programs are designed for clients who have completed an inpatient stay or are enrolled in an outpatient program. The houses require that residents regularly attend 12-step meetings during their stay. The Retreat is careful to identify as a community-based peer support organization and not a source for psychotherapy, medical treatment or professional detox services.
Accommodations and Amenities
The Retreat’s sober living homes are all located in St Paul’s historic Crocus Hill neighborhood. Of the six locations, one is designated for women and the other five are for men. The Retreat Sober Living can accommodate 78 clients—16 women and 62 men. Each home has comfy, basic accommodations including a common sitting area with comfortable couches, carpeted floors and spacious kitchens. All clients share dorm-style rooms before graduating to larger double rooms with more privacy. The houses are all beautiful, historic and at least partially remodeled on the inside. Each location is within walking distance of public transportation, grocery stores and neighborhood AA/NA meetings.
Rules and Regulations
To move in to one of the The Retreat Sober Living houses, clients must agree to attend four AA/NA meetings per week, get a sponsor and a weekly service commitment. The minimum stay is six months. Other rules include obeying all house curfews, being employed full-time and attending the weekly house 12-step meetings. Though residents are initially limited in their interactions with the opposite sex, more privileges can be gained as they progress through the program. Each home also has three on-site staff members who help direct meetings and oversee house operations. Smoking is permitted outdoors in designated areas only.

The Retreat Sober Living residences are located in a vibrant recovery community. Every day there are hundreds of 12-step meetings in the Minneapolis and St. Paul metro. The Retreat has over 300 volunteers from the local recovery community who actively participate in the programs each month.
