The Basics
The Retreat is a comprehensive rehab facility based in the Minneapolis suburb of Wayzata, Minnesota. The Retreat offers a range of substance abuse treatment services for adults including residential, sober living and outpatient programs. The outpatient programs are offered at two facilities and include an adult basic outpatient program and a day treatment program for older adults. The Retreat is careful to identify as a community-based peer support organization and not a source for psychotherapy, medical treatment or professional detox services.
Treatment and Staff
The adult evening program typically lasts 18 weeks. This level of care is suited for those who have completed residential treatment—at The Retreat or elsewhere—or those who can’t take time away from work or home for rehab. The phased program includes group and individual therapy and is offered at two locations. In the Wayzata facility, phase one meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 8 pm for a duration of six weeks and phase two meets Thursdays 6 to 8 pm for 12 weeks. At the St. Paul office, phase one meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 8 pm for six weeks and phase two meets Wednesdays 6 to 8 pm for 12 weeks.
The older adult day treatment program at The Retreat recognizes that those over the age of 60 often face unique issues that may impact their recovery. The program addresses the consequences of addiction related to aging, required medications, the loss of spouses, isolation and chronic illness. This program is eight weeks, runs Mondays and Wednesdays from 9am to 3 pm and includes lunch. There are also specialized on-site AA meetings during the day for older folks on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
Therapy in both outpatient programs generally consists of CBT methods. Over the course of the program, clients have access to a variety of specialty groups including trauma-informed care and gender-specific topics. The Retreat offers only basic dual diagnosis services in the form of group sessions, which address issues such as anxiety trauma and PTSD. Those with major depression and other serious or persistent mental illness issues will not find specialized care or medication management services at The Retreat, but referrals can be provided. All the programs at The Retreat are based on the 12-step philosophy. They all provide information about local meetings and require clients to get a sponsor and work an AA or NA program.
The Retreat team includes primarily peer counselors, who are former clients and now help others achieve sobriety.

The Retreat offers extensive educational programs about the disease of addiction to surrounding communities, as well as information and resources about family support programs like Alanon.
