The Retreat New Zealand Review
The Retreat New Zealand is a residential treatment facility that offers 30 day programs based on the Minnesota Model along with a foundation in the 12 steps. Citing a success rate of up to 70 percent, The Retreat is regarded as one of New Zealand’s most effective rehabs. Founded by Roger Green, who has been a counselor for over 30 years, the small, intimate treatment facility is a not-for-profit that focuses on the individual’s unique needs in treatment and refers to residents as “guests,” rather than clients or patients.
Accommodations and Food
The Retreat is a spacious one story home in a safe and quiet neighborhood. The house can accommodate between eight and 12 clients who all get private bedrooms and share bathrooms. The residence has several commons areas including a living room and dining room. Additionally, the grounds surrounding the house are beautifully maintained with lush flowers, greenery and a small pond, making for a very serene environment.
All food is organic and prepared by a chef who sources the ingredients locally, including from the on-site garden.
Treatment and Staff
All incoming clients are required to have had three days of total sobriety prior to admission. Programming begins with an introduction to the rest of the community to establish a safe and supportive environment. Treatment is very structured, and includes daily 12-step meetings, Big Book study, lectures, videos and group sessions. There is an emphasis on accountability and self awareness throughout the program that serves as the catalyst for change. The program is designed to last 30 days, through in some cases clients have the option to extend their stay.
The Retreat’s main mission is for clients to get and stay sober by being in a place filled with like minded individuals who are able to help guide them. There aren’t any therapy or intervention services offered, with the exception of the family group. This is due to the program being based on The Minnesota Model of abstinence and 12-step support. Detox and dual diagnosis support are not available.
The staff is made up of all people in recovery, some of whom are counselors, and others who are volunteers that have been through the program themselves.
Extras
There is a family program that meets once a week on Wednesday evenings. This is an ongoing group that continues even after their loved one leaves treatment.
