The Basics
The Renfrew Center is a nationwide behavioral health organization dedicated primarily to helping clients struggling with eating disorders. Founded in 1985, the company has expanded over the years to include services in several locations in New Jersey. One such facility is located in Mount Laurel; it provides outpatient, Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and day treatment plans for those struggling with eating disorders and related dual diagnoses.
Treatment and Staff
Before treatment can begin, each client must go through an initial intake and assessment process with the staff to help determine their needs. As detox services are not available on site, those struggling with chemical dependency or addiction must either complete this process before enrolling or get referrals to a nearby program.
Once stabilized, clients can attend programs in a range of intensities. The most intensive is day treatment, which typically lasts all day and meets for five days a week. Below that is IOP, meeting three nights a week for several hours. Finally, standard outpatient is the most flexible and can fit any schedule. In all programs, treatment consists of group, individual and family therapy utilizing evidence-based practices including CBT and exposure therapy. Clients also go through a strict regimen of nutritional counseling and experiential therapies including dance, psychodrama, art therapy and mindfulness training. Though the program is not inherently 12-step based, clients are encouraged to attend peer support groups at their own discretion. Additionally, the facility also has its own trademarked recovery curriculum which consists of four phases, namely stabilization, experimentation, learning healthy behaviors and relapse prevention.
The staff at Renfrew Center of Southern New Jersey is a well-rounded mixture of RDNs, LCSWs, LMFTs, LPCs, psychologists and additional Master’s-level clinicians.
Extras
Other special services include culturally and religiously-sensitive counseling services including Christian and Jewish-oriented treatment tracks. For those in need of more intensive services, residential treatment programs are also offered at a variety of locations throughout the country. The facility also hosts rotating peer support meetings. Finally, aftercare services are also available in the form of stepped down treatment for those who complete primary care.
