The Basics
Founded in 1985, The Renfrew Center is a nationwide organization with a number of facilities throughout the country. While many of its programs are primarily designed to help clients struggling with eating disorders, treatment is also available for co-occurring disorders including addiction. The organization’s facility in Ridgewood, New Jersey (referred to as The Renfrew Center of Northern New Jersey), provides outpatient care including day treatment and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP).
Treatment and Staff
Detox services are not available on-site but those in need can get referrals to nearby facilities if necessary. The most intensive of the three outpatient tracks is day treatment, which lasts all day, five days a week. While in the program, participants are also served two meals a day. Less intensive is IOP, which meets three nights a week (though clients are still served dinner upon attending). Most flexible is standard outpatient, which can be made to fit any schedule.
All programming includes individual, group and family therapy with evidence-based practices including CBT and exposure therapy. The organization also has its own trademarked method for treating eating disorders which involves stabilizing clients, allowing them to experiment, teaching them healthy behaviors through practice and maintaining their recovery with relapse prevention techniques. As to be expected, nutritional counseling is also a prominent part of therapy. In addition to clinical approaches, Renfrew also uses experiential methods including dance, art therapy, psychodrama and mindfulness training. Culturally sensitive therapy and Christian-based recovery programming are also available. While 12-step participation is not always required, clients are still encouraged to attend off-site peer support meetings.
The staff at Renfrew Center consists of LCSWs, RDNs, LMFTs, LPCs, psychologists and additional Master’s-level counselors.

As mentioned, specialized care tracks are available for clients of various cultures and religions, including Christian and Jewish-oriented programs. In addition to its outpatient options, the organization also provides residential treatment programs at a number of locations throughout the country. Those who finish primary care can work with staff members to develop stepped down aftercare plans.
