The Basics

Located in New York City, The Renfrew Center of New York is one of many regional facilities owned and operated by the nationwide Renfrew Center. The latter was founded in 1985 and provides a range of treatment programs through its subsidiary facilities to clients struggling with eating disorders and related, co-occurring issues. More specifically, the location in NYC provides flexible outpatient, Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and day treatment options to clients in the area.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning a program, all participants go through an initial intake and assessment process to help staff members determine where to place them. As detox is not available on-site, those also struggling with addiction must stabilize elsewhere before attending the program. Though each of the programs cover similar material, each varies in intensity. Day treatment is akin to a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), meeting five times a week for full days of care with two meals. IOP is less intensive, with three weekly meetings and a dinner meal. Standard outpatient is flexible in terms of therapy scheduling and definitely the least intensive.

All programming include individual, group and family therapy with evidence-based practices including CBT and exposure therapy. In addition to these sessions, each program includes nutritional counseling and experiential therapy including psychodrama, dance, art therapy and mindfulness training. While 12-step participation is not required, participants are encouraged to attend off-site self-help meetings at their own discretion. Above all, each program follows the trademarked Renfrew Method which takes clients through four structured stages of care from stabilization to relapse prevention techniques.

The staff at Renfrew Center consists of LCSWs, psychologists, LPCs, LMFTs, RDNs and additional Master’s-level clinicians.

Extras

For Jewish and Christian clients, specialized treatment plans are available and implement culturally and religiously-sensitive approaches. Those in need of more intensive care can also attend residential treatment at various other Renfrew Center locations as necessary. Once they complete primary care, alumni can also work with staff members to develop stepped down aftercare plans.

In Summary

In all, The Renfrew Center of New York offers a range of outpatient options for clients struggling with eating disorders and related behavioral health issues. Each program includes evidence-based care, nutritional counseling, experiential therapy and dual diagnosis support. Though the cost of each program may differ depending on the strength of each client’s insurance, The Renfrew Center of New York remains a strong resource for those seeking outpatient care in Manhattan.
