The Renfrew Center is an expansive behavioral health organization founded in 1985 with locations spread throughout the United States. Though it also provides outpatient treatment in different intensities at many of its facilities, The Renfrew Center in Coconut Creek, Florida, is one of two residential treatment locations (the other being the organization’s flagship facility in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania). The Renfrew Center Coconut Creek opened in 1990 and has continued to help adolescent and adult women ever since.
Accommodations and Food
Located on a 10-acre horse farm, the facility is a sprawling compound with a total of 40 beds available for residents. All bedrooms are shared between two clients, each with twin beds, dressers, basic decor and shared closet space. Before beginning a program, all clients go through an initial intake and assessment process to help the staff members develop their treatment plans. On-site detox services for substance abuse are not available as the facility is primarily focused on treating eating disorders; still, those in need can get referrals to nearby programs.
Once stabilized, all residents attend individual, group and family therapy with evidence-based treatment practices including CBT. Dual diagnosis support including medication management is also available. While 12-step participation is not required, those seeking nearby meetings can get referrals as necessary.
A major portion of the program also focuses on teaching clients a healthy relationship with eating. To that end, The Renfrew Center uses its own trademarked curriculum, which takes clients through phases of stabilization, experimentation, training healthy behaviors and relapse prevention. Part of this method includes nutritional counseling, cooking classes and exposure therapy.
The staff at the Renfrew Center Coconut Creek consists of LCSWs, RDNs, LMFTs, LPCs, psychologists and additional Master’s-level clinicians.
Extras
Experiential therapy is also emphasized, with various methods used such as psychodrama, dance, art therapy and mindfulness training. Both culturally and religiously-sensitive programs are available such as Christian and Jewish-oriented treatment plans. Those who complete primary care can also work with staff members to develop stepped down aftercare plans, or else get referred to nearby outpatient and transitional living facilities.
