The Recovery Center at Mercy HospitalThe Basics

The Recovery Center at Mercy Hospital is found on the fourth floor of Mercy Hospital—a five story brick building located in Portland, Maine, just a few short miles from Portland Harbor and Cape Elizabeth. The Recovery Center has treated men and women suffering from addiction and alcoholism for over 30 years, providing outpatient services for adults in Cumberland County and surrounding areas. Utilizing an evidence-based approach which marries mental health treatment and traditional therapies, the Recovery Center supports those with co-occurring disorders as well as stand-alone substance abuse issues.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning treatment, potential clients must schedule an assessment. Once evaluated, they are placed in either the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).

The PHP meets 5 days per week, Mondays through Fridays, from 9 am to 3 pm. PHP is considered a stabilization level of care and clients admitted to this program must require medical oversight—typically co-occurring health issues or health concerns related to recent completion of off-site detox (Mercy Hospital does not have a detox program.) The PHP is facilitated by registered nurses and therapists who report to the staff physician on the client’s progress.

The daily schedule consists of individual and group therapy using CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Topics include addiction and alcoholism, gender specific groups, managing stress, dealing with depression and anxiety and coping skills. Those with co-occurring disorders also see a psychiatrist to address any medication issues. Typical length of PHP is anywhere from one week to 10 days, depending on the individual’s physical condition. The objective is to stabilize for transition to the IOP for completion of treatment.

The IOP meets Mondays through Fridays from 9 am to noon or from 1 to 4 pm for approximately four weeks. Clients attend daily groups with individual therapy once per week. Group sessions also use MI and CBT, and topics include introduction to the 12-steps, family dynamics, coping skills, setting goals, addiction studies and stress reduction techniques. Groups are limited to six people. Clients are drug tested weekly and are encouraged to attend outside AA/NA meetings.

Mercy Hospital staff includes a team of LPNs, CSACs and a psychiatrist.

In Summary

The Recovery Center at Mercy Hospital is a comprehensive mental health and outpatient substance abuse treatment program. For clients in the Portland area with co-occurring disorders or who require a structured PHP, the Recovery Center is an ideal choice—allowing clients the option to also step down to a traditional IOP to continue their journey to mental health and sobriety.
