The Psychological Center, Inc. Women’s View Review
The Psychological Center, Inc. is a Lawrence, Massachusetts based network of support for substance abuse, addiction and mental health issues. Its gender-specific residential treatment facility for women ages 25 and up, Women’s View, offers evidence-based addiction programs in an empowering and strength-based atmosphere. Through relapse prevention, psychoeducation and counseling, treatment aims to give women accountability and stability in sobriety.
Accommodations and Food
The large two-story, multi-family townhouse duplex where clients reside during their six month stay has eight bedrooms and three bathrooms. Clients sleep two or three to a room, which are furnished with twin beds and shared wardrobe space, dressers and small desk. The residence also has two living rooms that are furnished with couches, chairs, coffee tables and TVs and a front porch area with walk-up ramp. The surrounding neighborhood is quiet and residential, close to shopping and public transportation.
Clients are taught life skills that include basic cooking and cleaning. They take turns preparing meals for each other daily with food that is provided by the facility. They have meals in one of the two eat-in kitchens on site.
Treatment and Staff
During the initial stage of treatment, clients undergo a full assessment and can start to receive medical services such a medication management and monitoring with a psychiatrist. Programs are designed for women struggling with substance abuse or a dual diagnosis. Clients partake in a case management program, psychoeducation, lectures and groups led by either a therapist or their peers. Individual therapy is scheduled weekly. There are regular 12-step meetings along with trauma-informed care, CBT and anger management classes. Clients begin to build a supportive community, get a sponsor and take steps to secure employment while working on an aftercare plan. The program is based on a four phase, step-down system where each client progresses at her own pace.
The staff of Women’s View include 24-hour support staff, LCSWs, psychologists and psychiatrists as well as peer support.
Extras
In addition to getting a job or a volunteering position within the community, clients are able to participate in many of the facilities fundraising and outreach events. There are also galas, sober outings to the museum or movie nights and softball tournaments.
Women’s View has a family program that includes counseling and education. There are also housing and transitional care options available, as well as legal aid resources and family reunification services.
