Tampa FloridaThe Basics

The Oasis is a substance abuse treatment center located on the second floor of Tampa Community Hospital, which has been serving the community of Tampa, Florida for over 30 years. As the only hospital-based medically supervised program in the area and one of the few in the country, The Oasis provides an Addiction Recovery Unit for those requiring detox as well as Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), inpatient treatment, an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and halfway houses.

Approaching addiction treatment as a disease, rather than a weakness or a moral issue, The Oasis aims to provide a safe place for alcohol and drug abusers to detox, begin the healing process, develop the proper skills to put their lives back together and lay a solid groundwork for sober living.

Treatment and Staff

Upon admittance, clients at The Oasis receive a thorough physical examination and evaluation to help determine an appropriate level of care. For those who don’t require the inpatient track and can receive treatment while working and living at home, an individualized IOP treatment plan is devised and a primary counselor is assigned. Treatment includes daily interventions, dual diagnosis support, educational classes, group therapy and family programs that emphasize education and family dynamics. The 12 steps are emphasized in IOP and AA/NA meetings are available. Three-hour IOP sessions are scheduled Monday, Wednesday and Thursday nights.

For those who need it, The Oasis offers a three- to seven-day detox program from alcohol, opiates, benzodiazepines and various other drugs. Since The Oasis is part of a larger hospital, clients are monitored closely during detox by medical staff. If any issues come up, residents can easily be transferred to the appropriate hospital floor. Suboxone and methadone are prescribed to mitigate the discomfort of withdrawal from opiates, Librium is offered to those withdrawing from alcohol and a range of other medications are available for those having difficulty with sleep or anxiety.

The Oasis staff members are certified and trained in addictionology; it includes LCSWs, registered nurses and a psychiatrist who visits every week to provide medication adjustments.

Extras

Free smoking secession classes are available as well as up to two years of aftercare for both clients and their families. There are also ASL and other hearing impaired assistance services available.

In Summary

The Oasis is a hospital-based treatment program and detox for those in the Tampa area who are struggling with substance abuse. Using individualized programs and the 12-step framework, The Oasis provides evidence-based care for those with Medicaid, Medicare, Medipass and private insurance.
