The Basics

Based out of Houston, Texas, The Mend Center is a small outpatient  psychological facility with treatment targeted specifically toward clients with varying forms of psychosis. The organization has its own method for treating clients with conditions on the psychotic spectrum, which it calls The Transforma Method, a philosophy specifically designed for those who have previously been diagnosed as “treatment-resistant.”

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning a treatment regimen, clients go through an initial intake and assessment process to help the clinical team develop their individualized treatment plan. Because the facility provides outpatient-only programs, those in need of medical detox for substance abuse must seek those services elsewhere before attending. Although treatment at The Mend Center is catered more specifically to clients with severe mental illness, dual diagnosis support for issues like addiction is also available as necessary, including medication management.

The facility’s main track is its Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for mental illness, an option with weekday sessions available from 9 am to noon (with additional sessions available by appointment). While the specifics may vary, each program includes individual and group therapy with evidence-based practices including CBT and DBT.

Above all, the program stresses its own Transforma Method which has its origins in Lacanian psychoanalysis. This approach asserts that psychosis comes from failed attempts to anchor one’s experience in a structure that has little to no reference to an existing, external structure, resulting in a disjointed experience of reality. The program teaches clients to establish and work within their worldview, gradually assimilating functional and real-world beliefs into it, to live a healthier life.

Though 12-step participation is not a required part of the program, those who feel it would be beneficial can get referrals to off-site meetings as necessary.

The staff at Mend Center consists of MDs, LPCs, LCDCs, LCSWs and additional Master’s-level clinicians.

Extras

Art therapy is also utilized in treatment. Those who finish an IOP track can also step down the intensity of their care after they’ve stabilized and continue to attend therapy. Standalone psychological assessments are also available.

In Summary

The Mend Center is a fairly niche outpatient option for clients with more severe mental illness. The program is non-12-step based and does not facilitate detox. Instead, treatment consists of a balance of evidence-based practices and relatively experimental psychoanalytic techniques to help clients form their own sense of meaning out of their life experiences. Though it may not be applicable to all, The Mend Center is a new approach to mental illness and a resource worth considering for those exploring different options for mental health treatment.
