Bensalem PennsylvaniaThe Basics

The Livengrin Foundation is a multi-location Pennsylvania substance abuse treatment organization that serves Bucks, Montgomery, Delaware, Lehigh, and Philadelphia counties. The foundation was established in 1966 by Standish Forde Hansell with dreams of turning his country estate house into a retirement community. After some council and the push from trusted confidants, Hansell instead transitioned the 46-acre property into the first non-hospital chemical dependency treatment facility in Pennsylvania.

In the 1970s, Livengrin developed family programs, outpatient programs and specialized services for special needs clients. Livengrin and the clinical staff offer highly specialized and streamlined approaches to helping clients through a continuum of care.

Treatment and Staff

The first step for potential clients is scheduling an appointment with an intake coordinator. During the bio-psycho-social assessment, staff take into account the unique attributes of each client and place them in an appropriate treatment program. All recovery paths are tailored to the client’s initial needs and continued progress through the program and their goals for after discharge. There is no standard length of time or cookie-cutter approach to therapy.

Outpatient programs are available for individuals who do not require residential treatment. Three levels of outpatient programming are available with varying intensities: Full Day Outpatient, Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and general outpatient tracks are available, with both day and evening hours available.

The Full Day Outpatient program is ideal for individuals stepping down after primary or residential treatment. Clients attend treatment at the facility from 7:30 am to 4 pm beginning the day with a psycho-educational lecture, following which clients attend group therapy where they discuss topics as raised during the morning’s lecture. Weekly individual therapy sessions are scheduled as needed. While clients return back home in the evenings, the Full Day Outpatient program does not permit clients to work, attend school or focus on responsibilities outside of treatment.

The IOP track allows for more scheduling freedom. Clients attend treatment at the facility three days per week for three hours each session, beginning their day with a psycho-educational lecture followed by therapeutic activities. Group and individual therapy is scheduled as well as required 12-step meetings. Clients must find a sponsor within one week of being enrolled in IOP.

General Outpatient is the next step down from IOP, and is considered a component of aftercare. Clients attend just one weekly two- to three-hour session. Group, individual as well as family therapy is incorporated to help the client as they approach their discharge date.

All activities are facilitated by a team of mental health professionals including CADCs, LPCs, MFTs and LCSWs. A range of therapeutic techniques are utilized including 12-step principles, CBT and DBT practices. Specialized groups are also offered that include Early Skills Recovery Groups and Relapse Prevention Groups. Livengrin does offer dual-diagnosis support but there is no doctor on staff to prescribe medication for clients.

Extras

On Tuesday evenings, Livengrin hosts a family program allowing the loved ones of clients to come together. An MFT facilitates the group and provides educational lectures and tools for clients and their families to be more supportive and cohesive.

In Summary

The Livengrin Foundation has a rich history of substance abuse treatment and an experienced staff to help clients begin their recovery. With three outpatient tracks, individuals receive treatment that is appropriate for their level of need. Family programs and specialized groups offer clients a continuum of care to ensure their commitment to recovery while still living at home and attending to their responsibilities.
