The Basics
Based out of Burlington, Vermont, The Kahm Clinic provides comprehensive, outpatient-based programs for clients struggling with eating disorders. Unlike similar programs, which use an evidence-based psychotherapy approach along with nutritional counseling to treat these issues, the Kahm Clinic takes a more medical approach to fixing metabolism and diet along with addressing beliefs about food and eating.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning a program, all clients go through an initial intake and assessment process to help the staff determine their needs. This process also includes medical testing to determine each client’s body composition and the speed of their metabolism. As an outpatient facility, on-site medical detox and stabilization services are not available.
Once clients are stabilized, they can work with on-staff nutritionists and dietitians to develop a healthy eating and exercise plan. Unlike many nutritional and dietary facilities, the Kahm Clinic uses more comprehensive medical testing in their plans—which can lead to unorthodox meal plans as well. For example, clients who are overweight may actually be advised to eat more at first rather than less to repair their metabolism before making later changes to lose excess fat. While the organization’s focus is primarily on nutritional counseling and dietary education, it can provide referrals and works with multidisciplinary teams nearby to help clients get the counseling and medical care they need as well. As a result of this approach, the facility doesn’t use a 12-step methodology, nor does it offer dual diagnosis support.
The staff at the Kahm Clinic consists of several Master’s-level nutritionists and Certified Eating Disorder Specialists (CEDSs).

In addition to eating disorders like bulimia and anorexia, The Kahm Clinic can also design programs for athletes, clients who are pre-diabetic, compulsive exercisers and other rare or marginal eating issues. As all care programs are flexible, those who complete a primary care regimen can do follow-up or stepped-down sessions, often with staff members helping to coordinate care with outside doctors and psychotherapists.

While the treatment team doesn’t offer on-site psychotherapy for eating disorders, it does provide thorough medical testing to help clients understand how their body is processing food and what they need to do to make a healthy change. The cost of treatment is sure to vary by insurance and the program is best used as a supplement to additional medical and psychiatric care—still, the Kahm Clinic provides an important service for clients looking to close the gap between different aspects of eating disorder-related care.
