The Horsham Clinic Adolescent Inpatient Review
Among other services, The Horsham Clinic provides intensive inpatient treatment for children, adolescents and teens for behavioral health issues and substance abuse—starting as young as age four, up to the age of 18. It’s located just 16 miles north of Philadelphia, in the town of Ambler, Pennsylvania. Horsham Clinic works on building social skills and teaching new ways to cope, and treatment can include medication management. Clients can expect modalities such as CBT and expressive therapy, in both an individual and group setting. The Horsham Clinic has been serving the community for over 60 years in the same location.
Accommodations and Food
The sprawling campus is on 55 acres of land. There are several buildings that offer residential accommodations in large, estate style housing facilities. There are four units dedicated to the adolescent program that are separated by age. The bedrooms are furnished with twin beds and there are shared bathrooms in the hallways. There is a gymnasium on site, classrooms, therapy and medical rooms. Everything is provided for the clients in terms of linens and other daily needs, except for personal toiletries.
There is a cafeteria that serves three meals a day in the shared dining room. There are always healthy options provided.
Treatment and Staff
The average length of stay in the inpatient program is anywhere from a week to about 10 days, though clients can stay for much less time or stay longer depending on their progress. There is treatment five days a week in addition to tutoring for all clients so that they don’t fall behind in their studies. Typically there are three to four group sessions per day and one or two individual sessions per week. Clients participate in relapse prevention, behavior modification, and are consistently challenged with new coping and resiliency skills. For those clients who have a dual diagnosis they do receive specialty addiction counseling and education, and an introduction to the 12-steps.
There are a variety of evidence-based treatment methods that are used with the younger clients. Regular play therapy, music and art therapy, process groups and groups that focus specifically on improving communication skills and learning how to manage their anger and acting out behaviors. These programs are built on a reward system for client who are showing significant progress during their stay.
There are medical and clinical staff including 25 psychiatrists, LCSWs, CACs, nurses, teachers, LPCs and therapists who specialize in working with young people and trauma.
Extras
Family involvement at The Horsham Clinic is emphasized for any age level, but specifically for the younger clients. There are comprehensive family therapy options that are held in an individualized setting.
During the inpatient level of treatment clients work with their assigned counselors on an aftercare plan, which at The Horsham Clinic can be in the step-down Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP).
In Summary
Certainly no parent is enthusiastic about the idea of their child having to leave home to go to a behavioral health facility due to a mental illness or addiction. However, The Horsham Clinic has been around for a long time and has a solid reputation for providing the families that come through with peace of mind. It offers thorough treatment and age appropriate programming, along with the continued schooling and support.
