Mt. Vernon New YorkThe Basics

The Guidance Center of Westchester is a non-profit, community-based organization that has been providing behavioral and mental health services and resources since 1942. GCW has a network of seven facilities in and around Mount Vernon, New York. GCW offers substance abuse treatment with both an outpatient program and Medication-Assisted Therapy (MAT) services.

Treatment and Staff

GCW serves those seeking support for substance abuse with both the Metro-Chemical Dependency Treatment Center and the Open Door program. The Metro program is intended for those with opiate-based addiction and provides MAT using methadone to help clients with cravings and withdrawal symptoms. This program also consists of weekly individual therapy and three group therapy sessions per week. Treatment for co-occurring disorders is available if necessary as is vocational and job support.

The Open Door outpatient program is intended for those struggling with controlled substances or alcohol abuse. Clients enrolled in this program also meet for a weekly one-on-one session and groups three times a week. While support for co-occurring disorders, job assistance, vocational training and addiction education are offered, they are not integrated into treatment for those enrolled in this track.

All forms of treatment are evidence-based and typically utilize CBT methodology. The 12-steps are not integrated into the treatment at GCW.

The staff at GCW consists of Registered Nurses (RNs), LPCs, CADCs and LSWs.

Extras

In addition to substance abuse treatment services, clients may access The Center for College and Careers, early childhood education programs, housing services (both temporary and permanent) and general mental health care—including stabilization.

In Summary

GCW’s two outpatient programs incorporate traditional therapeutic methods using proven treatment techniques. Depending on their needs, clients may choose to enroll in either the MAT program or general outpatient support for a less intensive recovery experience. Staff are specially equipped to offer support for co-occurring disorders as well as vocational training and education. Regardless of the program, individualized attention and planning are the foundation of treatment, making this a solid choice for Upstate New Yorkers.
